Leeds v Manchester United (2pm)

Manchester United head to familiar foes Leeds amid growing scrutiny on Michael Carrick. The team has endured its poorest league opening in four decades and faced added turmoil after defender Lisandro Martinez criticized the club's leadership for insufficient squad spending following Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine spoke bluntly even though he contributed to recent concessions against Fulham and Tottenham. United have secured just one victory in their first six league outings and also exited the League Cup at the hands of Brighton. Leeds have not defeated the Red Devils at Elland Road since 2002 yet they delivered the sole home setback during Carrick's interim tenure last season in April. Rivalry remains intense in this northern derby and Michael Butler leads our live coverage while Jamie Jackson and Barney Ronay provide reports and insight.

In the MLS Lionel Messi netted a brace to guide Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory at Atlanta United. Messi and Luis Suarez linked up to create the opening goal finished by Mexican forward German Berterame. Messi then took control after the interval with two fine individual strikes.

European roundup

Barcelona extended their flawless La Liga campaign with a 5-2 win over Real Betis while Bayern Munich Paris Saint-Germain and Internazionale also claimed victories.

Nottingham Forest v Arsenal (4.30pm)

Arsenal overwhelmed Lille 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday yet Mikel Arteta's side cannot afford dropped points if they aim to stay in the title hunt. The Gunners occupy second place on 15 points and travel to Forest aware that any lapse might let Manchester City build an early lead. Forest sit 15th with five points and possess a poor home record. Their most recent league success at the City Ground arrived in April with a 4-1 triumph over relegated Burnley. WSL: Arsenal 1-1 Birmingham

An equalizer by Olivia Smith spared Arsenal defeat but a home stalemate with Birmingham failed to ease concerns over Renee Slegers's position as head coach. Jeers greeted the final whistle at Emirates Stadium as the outcome left Arsenal with six points from six games and without a win in five Women's Super League outings the club's longest such streak in WSL history. They sit eighth nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City who have played one match fewer.

Birmingham took the lead early in the second half when Oceane Hurtre finished calmly after an unchallenged run from halfway. Alessia Russo struck the frame in the first half with a diving header among numerous Arsenal opportunities while Sophie Baggaley stayed busier in goal.

The sun shone. The temperature reached the high 20s. A spirit of warmth prevailed. Supporters who struggled with official tickets discovered they could contact the president of Torreense for assistance. Those Nuno-tickets proved genuine. Fans could choose any seat in a venue larger than needed and those who reached the hospitality area found beer available without charge.

Residents in Leiria appeared surprised yet remained highly welcoming. A beer pump stood outside a patisserie on Praca Francisco Rodrigues Lobo and its owner soon welcomed help stacking empty barrels to keep Sagres flowing. There was a meeting at the town hall to explain these are not hooligans said the owner of a radical leftist flammkuchen restaurant between the square and the cathedral. They told us the club comes from the labour movement and I found that very interesting. And how had she found the fans? Noisy but with a quirky sense of humour.

This delivered everything Sunderland supporters could have hoped for on their first European away trip in 53 years and beyond. They had witnessed others enjoy such occasions and now they could mark off the list: intricate travel to an attractive foreign town they might never otherwise see a strict Albanian referee and a strong feeling of unity. There was even an injury-time winner from Noah Sadiki.

Ask any of the 5000 or so Wearsiders who journeyed to Portugal whether the Europa League was worthwhile and the response would be clear. Bournemouth Crystal Palace and Brighton fans would likely agree: European football especially for clubs new to it brings delight and exploration. It creates memories that last and if the cost is heightened relegation risk that price seems acceptable. Others at those clubs may hold different views.
