2h agoPreamble

58 min: The situation turns wild as the ball bounces around the Manchester United penalty area. Leeds require just one favourable rebound to the correct player. Michael Carrick and his side will likely introduce substitutes shortly or risk the contest swinging decisively in one direction.

56 min: Leeds sense an opportunity. They control 69 percent of the ball during this second period and press for another goal. Manchester United appear stunned. Tanaka reaches a loose ball first and fires high and wide. Yet the wayward attempt only energises the home supporters more.

54 min: Surviving another 45 minutes of high balls would rank as a monumental achievement for Manchester United. They have already conceded once and the makeshift back four of Yoro, Maguire, Mazraoui and Dalot offers little comfort.

GOAL! Leeds United 1-1 Manchester United (Calvert-Lewin 51)

Mazraoui gifts away a simple corner. Stach sends the ball toward the near post once more. Ampadu pins Maguire and no other United defender closes the space. Calvert-Lewin gains time and room to settle a bouncing ball seven yards from goal before striking past a helpless Lammens on his second touch. Elland Road explodes in celebration!

49 min: Leeds retain possession and deliver repeated crosses into the box. United’s defence holds firm yet the visitors create little threat in attack during this second half.

47 min: Yoro produces another fine defensive header at the back post to clear the threat for Manchester United. The Frenchman remains at right-back while Mazraoui shifts inside to replace Martínez at centre-back.

Full-time whistle!

Action resumes at Elland Road. Manchester United make a substitution: Mazraoui replaces Lisandro Martínez. A notable adjustment.

Half-time reading, courtesy of Jonathan Wilson. Other half-time scores appear to support Jonathan’s point. Sunderland and Crystal Palace both played demanding Europa League matches on Thursday and now struggle in the Premier League. Palace used their strongest lineup in Lyon and lost to the French side. They look fatigued at Brighton, who rested players after a Conference League victory.

Other half-time scores in the Premier League

Bournemouth 1-0 Sunderland

Brighton 3-0 Crystal Palace

Half-time: Leeds United 0-1 Manchester United

Maguire again excels by dispossessing Calvert-Lewin just before the half-time whistle as the Leeds striker threatens United’s goal. Frantic and frenetic, this is a Proper Football Match.

45+2 min: I would like to review the cross count for Leeds at the end of this half. Nearly 20, I would estimate, yet it is a Manchester United cross that has proved decisive for the visitors.

45 min: Two minutes of added time. Leeds probe with the ball but United appear content to sit deep and reach half-time.

43 min: Bruno Fernandes clutches his shoulder after a clash with Stach. Replays indicate little contact. The Manchester United player will continue.

41 min: Bogle surges into the Manchester United box with purpose and watches a deflected shot land in Lammens’ arms. That effort could easily have found the corner. Leeds remain very much in the contest.

39 min: Harry Maguire has performed well, incidentally. Composed in possession and strong in challenges. He and Yoro have handled every delivery into the Manchester United box.

37 min: Cameras turn to Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s director of football and a former Leeds player, in the stands. Wilcox, seated beside Omar Berrada and just ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson, looks downcast yet he will have admired this away display so far. They have withstood Leeds’ physical approach, though the home side still has time to alter the outcome.

GOAL! Leeds United 0-1 Manchester United (Mbeumo 35)

Mbeumo atones for his earlier miss! The same combination works again as Tielemans crosses from the right for the Cameroonian, who gets goal-side of Justin and wins the duel at the back post before steering a one-touch finish past Trafford!

33 min: Leeds press high but Manchester United bypass the press when Diallo exchanges a one-two with Fernandes to break on the counter. Diallo nearly has a clear run at goal yet Trafford rushes out of his area, fully committing to win the ball just inside his own half – and succeeds. A vital intervention from the Leeds goalkeeper that he could not afford to mishandle. Well played indeed.

30 min: From a searching Manchester United corner, Maguire stands as the clear target on the penalty spot yet the centre-back is marked tightly by Ampadu and Elvedi with no teammate in red available to finish.

Golden chance for Mbeumo!

28 min: Mbeumo ought to score! Tielemans finds space and crosses for the unmarked Mbeumo, who inexplicably heads wide from seven yards. Where were the Leeds centre-backs? Mbeumo generated power but directed the header wide of the near post from the cross from the right.

26 min: Leeds crosses arrive in waves, peppering the United penalty area. The game plan is obvious. Yoro clears well at the back post for Manchester United. Moments later from a free-kick, Stach curls a ball to the near post, Elvedi nods down and Lammens tips it away! Fine save! Pressure on the visitors mounts.

24 min: A positive spell for Leeds. United cannot retain possession up front as Mbeumo is crowded out by the three Leeds centre-backs while Ampadu clears everything in front of the home defence.

22 min: Gudmundsson must stay alert. Already on a yellow card, Leeds’ Swedish left-wing back complains to the referee over a decision. Second yellow cards have followed similar dissent. Play continues.

20 min: No clear chances for either side yet Leeds have squandered several opportunities to cross after committing numbers forward into the Manchester United box. Bogle and Stach possess the quality to trouble the visitors with their delivery, especially with Calvert-Lewin waiting.

18 min: Gudmundsson receives the next caution for a late tackle on Santos, catching the Brazilian high on the ankle with his studs. “A bit more force and that could be a red card,” says Gary Neville on Sky Sports commentary. One yellow card for each team. This match may not finish with a full complement of players if the pattern continues.

16 min: Darren England allows much to go unpunished, waving play on despite both teams diving into tackles. Bruno Fernandes is very late on Muharemovic yet play continues, with Stach wasting a good chance to cross or shoot on a Leeds counter-attack. When the ball stops, England cautions Fernandes for the challenge. The Manchester United captain can have few complaints yet he voices frustration to the referee about something else.

14 min: No goals here but a quick look at the other 2pm BST kick-offs shows Bournemouth lead Sunderland by one goal and Brighton lead 3-0 against rivals Crystal Palace! Diego Gómez has just scored from the halfway line for the Seagulls!

12 min: Ampadu makes a nasty challenge on Mbeumo 30 yards from the Leeds goal. The Welshman plants his studs directly into the ankle of the Manchester United player. Ampadu avoids a booking.

10 min: Tanaka is late on Santos and Leeds send every player back to defend the set piece. Fernandes overcooks the delivery and Calvert-Lewin clears at the back post.

8 min: Fernandes and Mbeumo interchange positions, the latter moving from left wing to striker then back to the flank.

6 min: Baleba proves vital for Manchester United today, especially with the visitors missing Mainoo’s physical presence. The Cameroonian outmuscles Stach, rides challenges then runs into Leeds traffic. A promising start from the Manchester United No 20.

4 min: Baleba is sent flying in midfield by a strong challenge from Stach. Precisely the tackle expected in a fixture of this intensity.

2 min: Bruno Fernandes operates from the right wing for Manchester United in midweek against Atlético. Today the Portuguese appears centrally as a false nine. Mbeumo starts on the left, Amad on the right. A fresh attacking shape for Carrick.

Full-time whistle!

Action begins in Yorkshire.

Elland Road is bouncing, naturally. “I don’t understand why Justin and Bogle are not in the discussion for England right-back,” emails Gary Stover. “That Farke has found a way to start them both must be a key to Leeds success. What do you think?” Justin and Bogle are very good footballers. I’m not sure they would win England the European Championship in 2028. Reece James, Nico O’Reilly, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Lewis Hall might.

Daniel Farke, Leeds manager, is the next to speak to Sky Sports:

We have to make sure we give them nothing. We want to make sure the ball belongs to us, to press them high, to have possession.

“Just had great fun reading the Joy of Six article,” emails Richard Hirst. “My abiding memory of the 1972 Leeds 5-1 win is not the olé period at the end, but that the goals all seemed to be scored from inside the six yard box: they were wonderful team goals which ripped Man Utd to shreds. The fact that Allan Clarke, my hero from his Fulham days, was on the end of them only made it better.”

A bit more on those teams: Leeds are unchanged for the fifth game in a row. That’s hardly surprising, given their excellent form. Daniel Farke’s team were unlucky to narrowly lose at Arsenal last weekend. Manchester United make two changes from the Champions League defeat at Atlético. Harry Maguire returns in place of Ayden Heaven, and Amad Diallo comes into the side instead of Marcus Rashford. Carlos Baleba makes his first Premier League start, while Matthijs de Ligt is in the squad for the first time since November 2025.

Michael Carrick was as dull as dishwater in his pre-match interview, but maybe that’s the point after a turbulent week. He spoke for a few minutes and these were the most exciting quotes:

It’s a fantastic game. We’ve come here to try and win the game. It’s a challenging place to come. I think we’ve got good balance throughout the team. Mainoo and Shaw were close-ish [to being fit] but not close enough.

Here’s Jonathan Liew on this week’s comments from Lisandro Martínez:

Leeds’ Ethan Ampadu, who captains the club for the 100th time, speaks to Sky Sports:

We know what this game means. We know that they are not too happy at the moment but we know that they might show a reaction. But we know what we need to do to win this game.

Manchester United ran five kilometres less than Tottenham in their 1-1 draw last weekend. This is an interesting read from Opta’s Ryan Benson on if Premier League teams really need to run more to win matches. The answer is not straightforward. It’s also fascinating to see that Leeds’ running stats from last season, only Manchester City covered more distance.

A reminder of what this fixture means to both teams:

The teams: Lisandro Martínez starts for Manchester United!

Leeds 3-4-2-1: Trafford; Justin, Elvedi, Muharemovic; Bogle, Ampadu, Tanaka, Gudmundsson; Stach, Okafor; Calvert-Lewin.
Subs: Zetterer, Longstaff, Wilson, Aaronson, Nmecha, Bijol, Bahoya, Bard, Gruev.
