From one New York sports champion to another, Game 5 of the NBA Finals echoed past triumphs in striking fashion.

For the fifth straight contest in the series, the San Antonio Spurs grabbed a double-digit advantage in the opening quarter. Yet for the fourth time across five games, the New York Knicks stayed unfazed and delivered the decisive plays late to finish another steady rally.

Powered by 45 points from Finals MVP Jalen Brunson, the Knicks took Game 5 by a 94-90 score to capture the franchise's first title in 53 years. The celebrations in New York may last just as long.

Amid the festivities, one last time this postseason, we examine how the Knicks reclaimed the NBA summit and what the outcome signals for both clubs.

An MVP-caliber closeout from Brunson

Before Game 5, Brunson's standing as New York's top performer in the series remained uncertain. Karl-Anthony Towns shone in the Knicks' initial pair of wins in San Antonio. Meanwhile, OG Anunoby delivered the efficient heroics during their memorable Game 4 comeback.

That picture sharpened fast on Saturday. Towns and Anunoby battled foul issues and totaled just 13 points on 4-for-18 shooting amid broader scoring woes for the visitors. In the first 16 minutes, New York managed only five made baskets, five blocks by Victor Wembanyama, and nine turnovers.

One player kept the offense moving: Brunson, who led all playoff scorers at 28.4 points per game.

On a night of limited offensive flow from both sides, Brunson used every tool to put on a show for the Knicks-heavy crowd in San Antonio. He hit from deep and midrange, created space with his off arm, drew three shooting fouls on threes in the second half, and drove past defenders including Wembanyama despite his size.

Brunson's output rose throughout the Finals as he grew more at ease attacking the Spurs' stout defense, something no other All-Star creator achieved this postseason. His game score climbed in each game, peaking with a historic closeout.

The showing turned the high school and two-time NCAA champion into an NBA champion and a New York icon. "It's everything I ever dreamed of," Brunson said. "It's why I came to New York."

Building a championship roster

The Knicks' title will echo league-wide not just for the fan base size or the long drought, the longest gap in history at 53 years, but because their makeup differs from most champions.

Brunson owns three All-NBA second-team selections but none on the first team. The same holds for Towns with three third-team nods and the rest of the roster. New York becomes only the second champion since 1980 without a first-team All-NBA player, joining the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons, another gritty group that exceeded expectations to upset a Western favorite in five games.

They also succeeded despite the modest stature of their best player. In an era of 7-foot centers and 6-foot-8 wings, the 6-foot-2 Brunson stands out, a testament to his skill and the supporting cast that highlights his strengths while covering his weaknesses.

That group formed through calculated risks, essential in a 30-team league where the average squad holds just a 3.3 percent title chance each year. Over five years the odds rise only to 15.6 percent and to 28.8 percent after a decade. Success demands luck, skill, and bold moves.

The Knicks adopted this approach after the 2019 summer brought two setbacks. They landed only the No. 3 pick despite a 17-65 record, missing Zion Williamson and Ja Morant. Then Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving joined the Brooklyn Nets instead.

With neither luck nor strong results, the Knicks hired Leon Rose as president of basketball operations. He executed five key moves that all succeeded:

Signing Brunson to a four-year, $104 million deal in 2022, viewed by many as an overpay for a guard averaging under 16.3 points.

In this reality, everything aligned for the Knicks, who posted a 16-3 playoff mark and plus-14.9 point differential before a plus-2.4 mark in the Finals and a 53-29 regular season.

Spurs' mixed emotions

The Spurs ended their run with disappointment, yet the season marked clear progress. They had not won a playoff series or topped 48 wins since 2016-17 and missed the playoffs six straight years.
