The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship in 53 years through standout play from Jalen Brunson, steady leadership by Mike Brown, a stifling defense and timely health across the roster.

Owner James Dolan, frequently criticized by fans, suggested another factor may have helped: personal restraint.

Video released Monday by the Roommates Show podcast showed Dolan advising Knicks players to consider avoiding sex during an expected ten-week run to an NBA title, framing the idea within a larger call for sacrifice just before the playoffs started.

"I had this idea that maybe you should give up sex for the next 10 weeks," Dolan told the team in a surprise address on 3 April. "The Spartans, they denied themselves, right, so they can have an edge. Get the edge."

The comments formed part of a longer talk in which Dolan pressed the group to seize what he called a rare chance to end one of the longest title droughts in North American sports.

"This team can win it all," Dolan said. "I don't know if you understand what it would mean for you to win the championship this year. It would be life-changing for all of you."

With five regular-season games left at the time, the Knicks won four before resting starters in the final outing, then posted a 16-3 postseason mark and beat the San Antonio Spurs in five games for the franchise's first crown since 1973.

Dolan's remarks on abstinence drew the most attention, yet he presented them as one piece of a broader message on focus and discipline, urging better eating habits, more sleep and fewer distractions.

"It's not a long time," Dolan said. "Sacrifice everything you've got these next 10 weeks to win that championship."

The owner also noted that families would need to support the effort.

"Go home, talk to your wives," Dolan said. "Don't tell them it was my idea. But let them know what this commitment is going to be like, and how they're going to have to sacrifice too."

"They were a little surprised, but the words hit," a source told SNY.

It remains unknown whether players followed the advice. Head coach Mike Brown clearly did not.

In comments to the New York Post after the video appeared, Brown said he had no plans to follow the suggestion at home.

"There was no way that I could get that done," Brown told the Post.

The speech came in Brown's first season after he replaced Tom Thibodeau, a move Dolan also discussed, telling players the front office saw enough talent to contend but wanted a more cooperative style.
