Meanwhile the scramble to bolster rosters for the coming campaign has turned turbulent right away due to the Ottawa Senators' surprising deal sending Brady Tkachuk to team up with his brother Matthew on the Florida Panthers.

Brady Tkachuk joined this group on Sunday when Ottawa sent their captain to the Panthers who are likely preparing a special podcast setup for the Tkachuk siblings.

Certain accounts suggest the Senators grew tired after his Olympic gold medal win yet exit rumors had circulated for some time. Pierre LeBrun reports Tkachuk with a full no movement clause listed few acceptable destinations and Ottawa contacted Vegas and Carolina. Given those teams lack his brother the Florida outcome was expected.

Note the last three cases involved American players departing Canadian teams for U.S. clubs marking a clear pattern. Toronto captain Auston Matthews has resisted this so far despite earlier reports of frustration. U.S. Olympic standout Connor Hellebuyck has drawn relocation rumors from Winnipeg while Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson appear content in Montreal. Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov fresh from his second Hart Trophy can extend July 1. The 33 year old enters the final year of a 9.5 million AAV deal. GM Julien BriseBois noted Kucherov wants to remain and the team agrees which limited their ability to match Darren Raddysh's 8.5 million deal with Toronto. BriseBois foresees him staying long term ideally through his career.

Others eligible July 1 include Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby New Jersey captain Nico Hischier and notably San Jose standouts Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Sharks GM Mike Grier said missing extensions would not be catastrophic yet expectations point to deals.

Restricted free agents like Chicago's Connor Bedard at age 20 Anaheim's Leo Carlsson at 21 and Dallas winger Jason Robertson at 26 also face big contracts with Robertson drawing trade talk amid reported gaps in negotiations.

Limited Free Agent Market

Speculation swirls around restricted free agents landing large offer sheets from clubs seeking young talent via draft assets.

St. Louis acquired Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway from Edmonton in 2024 offering a glimpse. Beyond the contentious Montreal Carolina exchanges those remain the sole offer sheets since 2013.

Brandon Bussi advanced from waivers last October to the Stanley Cup last week underscoring options beyond stars and hidden gems though strong team support like the Hurricanes and Rod Brind'Amour helps.

New General Managers Taking Charge

The NHL rarely sees five new general managers in the two months post season.

New Jersey began by hiring Sunny Mehta from Florida to succeed Tom Fitzgerald. Vancouver and Toronto underwent changes with new GMs and former stars: Ryan Johnson and the Sedin twins in Vancouver while John Chayka and Mats Sundin arrived in Toronto.

Chris MacFarland departed Colorado for Nashville. Joe Sakic who had stepped up returned temporarily as Avalanche GM.
