Read it and reflect: We approach the midpoint of the 2026 MLB campaign this week. It has featured many odd and unexpected developments. Some positive (the Chicago White Sox!), others less so (the New York Mets!).

Although much baseball remains, we pause to examine several postseason hopefuls as the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres, both chasing October in the National League, meet tonight on ESPN (10 p.m. ET).

We review the top asset for each of the leading 16 clubs from last week's ESPN MLB power rankings and assess if it holds up later. These 16 do not represent every contender: Amid this balanced year, nearly all clubs remain in contention. As of Sunday morning, FanGraphs gives 24 teams at least a 13% shot at the postseason, including 20 at 20% or better.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Los Angeles Dodgers

Week 12 ranking: 1
Record: 49-29 (1st in NL West)
Biggest strength: Rotation depth

The Dodgers top the league with a 3.15 rotation ERA and 43 quality starts, even with Blake Snell limited to one outing and Tyler Glasnow to seven. Shohei Ohtani has anchored the group, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto has performed strongly once more, yet the real revelation is Justin Wrobleski, now 8-2 with a 2.72 ERA and providing the club a reliable trio through the opening half.

Will it continue? Wrobleski sits 126th among 139 pitchers with 50-plus innings in strikeout rate. The bottom 21 on that list average a 5.06 ERA, so his results without many strikeouts stand out. He throws strikes and curbs homers, yet allows hard contact (15th percentile) and posts a slightly low ground-ball rate, offering little peripheral evidence that the performance lasts.

Still, it need not. The Dodgers hold Snell and Glasnow on the injured list. Roki Sasaki has improved after a rough April, though he remains uneven. River Ryan waits in Triple-A and may offer more than Eric Lauer right now. Los Angeles will aim to have Yamamoto and Ohtani ready for October, then rely on whoever is sharp when the playoffs arrive.

Atlanta Braves

Week 12 ranking: 2
Record: 48-28 (1st in NL East)
Biggest strength: Back end of the bullpen

The Braves lead the majors in win probability added from relievers as Raisel Iglesias (1.48 ERA, 15-for-15 in saves), Robert Suarez (0.56 ERA) and Dylan Lee (1.08 ERA) close games. Add rookie Didier Fuentes (2.45 ERA), now in high-leverage spots, and the group has surrendered just four homers across 118 innings while holding opponents to a .187 average.

Will it continue? At this elite level? Likely not, yet this remains a strong unit and should stay among the top late-inning groups. Lee, the lone left-hander, is pivotal for matchups against hitters like Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber in October. His fastball sits at 93.3 mph but is rarely hit, and his slider generates a 43% whiff rate. An extreme fly-ball pitcher who allowed 13 homers last year, he has kept the ball in the yard this season.

Milwaukee Brewers

Week 12 ranking: 3
Record: 46-29 (1st in NL Central)
Biggest strength: Hitting in the clutch

Clearly the Brewers have leaned on Jacob Misiorowski, the hard-throwing standout supported by Kyle Harrison and Aaron Ashby. The trio is 24-5 combined, and win-loss marks can still draw interest at times.

More notable: Milwaukee ranks tied for 27th in homers yet second in runs per game. Fourth in batting average, they score because they hit well with runners in scoring position, topping the majors at .819 OPS. FanGraphs measures "clutch" as improvement in high-leverage spots versus neutral ones, and the Brewers rank second as a club, trailing only the Braves. In key moments, Milwaukee elevates its output.

Will it continue? Why not? Ben Lindbergh explored this last week on The Ringer, questioning if the Brewers have "cracked the clutchness code." He noted this marks the seventh straight year they have outperformed the league with runners in scoring position, often by a wide margin, as seen in 2026 when the MLB average with RISP is a .737 OPS. They capitalize on hits and have repeated the feat with varied rosters. The usual view expects regression, but that has not occurred in seven seasons.

Philadelphia Phillies

Week 12 ranking: 6
Record: 42-35 (2nd in NL East)
Strength: Cristopher Sanchez and Kyle Schwarber

The Phillies have long carried a top-heavy roster, and the gap is wider this year as Sanchez and Schwarber carry much of the load. Saturday's rout of the Mets captured the 2026 club: Sanchez moved to 9-3 with a 1.80 ERA while Schwarber hit three homers, two in the third inning covering 913 feet total, lifting him to 28 on the year and back on pace for 60.

Will it continue? Possibly, yet that is not the main concern. The Phillies are 32-16 under interim manager Don Mattingly, so a fresh voice may have helped, but the club still has gaps. The back of the rotation with Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter has struggled, the lineup ranks below average in runs per game, and the defense sits last in defensive runs saved. Sanchez and Zack Wheeler would be tough in a playoff series, but more production is needed from Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm.

St. Louis Cardinals

Week 12 ranking: 7
Record: 41-34 (2nd in NL Central)
Strength: The top of the lineup

With Ivan Herrera batting .400 and Jordan Walker delivering strong numbers, the Cardinals rank tied for fourth in OPS from spots 1-4, typically JJ Wetherholt, Herrera, Alec Burleson and Walker.

Will it continue? It should. Nothing fluky explains Walker's figures; at 24, he appears to have adjusted. Herrera, aided by 20 hit-by-pitches, has become an on-base force and could join the short list of modern players hit more than 35 times in a season. Wetherholt continues to impress as a rookie, and Burleson shows added power. The focus is lifting output from spots 5-9, where the club ranks 26th in OPS. Lars Nootbaar's return will assist, and further help may come from third base and center field after Nolan Gorman and Victor Scott II were optioned.

Chicago Cubs

Week 12 ranking: 11
Record: 40-37 (3rd in NL Central)
Biggest strength: Defense

While Pete Crow-Armstrong (100th percentile in outs above average), Dansby Swanson (99th) and Nico Hoerner (96th) stay elite, the Cubs' story centers less on gloves and more on missed chances with runners in scoring position. They rank seventh in overall OPS but 21st with runners in scoring position (and 23rd in FanGraphs clutch rating).

Will it continue? The defense? Yes. It has masked occasional pitching issues. The Cubs will seek rotation and bullpen additions. Hitting with runners in scoring position? Here we expect positive regression, which could return the Cubs to the postseason.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Week 12 ranking: 12
Record: 39-38 (3rd in NL West)
Biggest strength: Umm ... the offense has underperformed

That is hardly a strength, unless you count staying over .500 despite weaker offense than last year. It is hard to see how they sit above .500 when scoring roughly half a run less per game and the rotation ranks 29th in strikeout rate with just two pitchers below a 4.97 ERA. The bullpen has performed well, yet Arizona has not dominated one-run games (13-12) or extra-inning contests (2-4).

Will it continue? Apologies for the muddle. This is more tangled than the 2016 Diamondbacks' uniform design. The question is whether the underperformance persists, which is no strength since Arizona needs better offense. FanGraphs projects 4.59 runs per game the rest of the way, above the current 4.28. That may still fall short of the playoffs unless the back of the rotation improves.

Washington Nationals

Week 12 ranking: 13
Record: 40-38 (3rd in NL East)
Biggest strength: The offense

If you predicted this before the season, you are not being truthful: The Nationals lead the majors in runs per game, up from 20th last year. They have gained more than a run per game, an uncommon jump. The underlying metrics show the offense is genuine, helped by James Wood at the forefront.

Will it continue? They probably will not finish first in runs, but reasons exist to expect continued scoring. The Nationals have raised their walk rate from 28th to 22nd. Even with Wood among the strikeout leaders, they rank ninth in lowest strikeout rate as a contact-oriented club. They possess power, and players like Curtis Mead and Keibert Ruiz, former top prospects, have adjusted to big-league pitching. Much depends on Wood and CJ Abrams, and Wood faded in the second half last year, yet the lineup carries depth, especially if Dylan Crews heats up.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Week 12 ranking: 14
Record: 39-39 (4th in NL Central)
Biggest strength: They have scored runs!

The exclamation fits because the Pirates failed to score much last season. They rank fifth in runs per game, and their year-to-year wRC+ gain is 24 points, the largest in the majors. Notably, they have managed without Oneil Cruz since June 6 and Konnor Griffin since May 30, yet hit as well in June as in May and better than in April. June struggles trace mainly to pitching.

Will it continue? The Pirates appear near a turning point. FanGraphs views the offense as overachieving and forecasts a drop of about half a run per game. With pitching suddenly shakier, playoff odds have slipped from 57% at the start of June to roughly 38%. I am slightly more positive on the offense than FanGraphs, particularly if upgrades arrive at catcher and DH.

San Diego Padres

Week 12 ranking: 15
Record: 39-37 (2nd in NL West)
Biggest strength: Bullpen

No shock, as Mason Miller delivers one of the most overpowering closer seasons ever and receives support from Jason Adam, Wandy Peralta, Adrian Morejon, Bradgley Rodriguez and others. The San Diego bullpen ranks second to Atlanta in ERA, leads in WAR and ground-ball rate, and sits fourth in OPS allowed and sixth in strikeout rate. Miller draws notice, but the unit offers depth from both sides.
