Sonay Kartal came up short in her bid for the biggest title of her career when her strong run at the Wuhan Open concluded with a final loss to Maja Chwalinska.

Kartal produced her finest performance of the season just two weeks after returning from a six-month absence due to a back issue, yet the demands of the event appeared to take their toll as she faded in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat.

Chwalinska instead claimed her first WTA 1000 crown, the initial trophy of her career on the WTA Tour, after recovering from a set and break deficit. The 25-year-old had made a notable impact earlier this year by reaching the French Open final as a qualifier, and she is now poised to enter the top 10.

Ranked 170th, Kartal became the lowest-ranked finalist at this level since 2009 and only the second British woman after Johanna Konta. She could not match Konta's 2017 Miami Open success, but her efforts will lift her to a new ranking of 50 and the British No 1 spot for the first time.

Kartal, whose sole prior tour title arrived at a minor event in Tunisia in 2024, carried her strong form into the opening set by breaking Chwalinska's serve right away.

The Pole favors spins, slices and angles over raw power, but Kartal's patience and tactical awareness proved effective in handling the style. She applied steady pressure and secured two further breaks to take the first set.

After her extended layoff and the physical demands of the week, Kartal sought medical attention at the end of the opening set. She received a tablet and used it after saving three break points in the second set's first game. Fatigue began to show, and after breaking to lead 2-0 she could not sustain the effort through another extended game.

A brief pause occurred in the fifth game when Chwalinska broke a shoelace while chasing a wide ball, yet the Pole's defensive play started to dominate and the 16th seed leveled the match.

Kartal attempted to regain control at the start of the deciding set but was repeatedly forced back by high balls from her opponent, allowing Chwalinska to overcome late tension and secure the win.
