It was late on a cool Glasgow evening when Josh Kerr revealed his more approachable side. Most fans who had cheered loudly as he claimed Commonwealth gold had already departed. Yet after shedding a few tears on the podium, Kerr remained for over thirty minutes to pose for photos and sign autographs.

The process took longer than expected because the focused competitor on the track proved talkative away from it. At times when offering guidance, Kerr could not help but show a touch of dry wit. "I was advising the youngsters to head to bed and gently scolding the parents," he says with a grin.

Kerr then becomes more reflective, describing how young supporters showed him handmade signs and shared their passion for athletics. The sole request he declined involved his Oakley sunglasses. He explained that he had worn them during his mile world record the previous month. "I aimed to stay until the last person left," Kerr says. "Besides, coffee at 6pm tends to keep you awake anyway."

Kerr knows this well. When we meet the next morning, he admits to just fifteen minutes of rest. Still, he shares detailed thoughts on his preparation, red-light therapy routines, and why the 1500m world record may need to wait. When asked how much of his true self reaches the public, he replies, "Probably not a great deal. Athletes face plenty of scrutiny, which I accept, but I prefer to shield my family from it. That is why I hesitate to share every detail from my personal life."

Although Kerr posts training clips online, he notes that he avoids letting competitors learn too much about him. "A certain persona appears on the track," he explains. "Anyone in the call room on Saturday would have noticed personalities emerging. Many athletes chatted and joked freely. That works for them, yet it is not my approach."

The track's disciplined figure stayed composed as the mile event began on Saturday. With 500m remaining he found himself trapped in the pack and well behind. Then came his signature display of powerful resolve. A drive forward, an acceleration, and finally an unstoppable finish.

Did Kerr feel concern? "No, I ran 3:42," he says. "Few things in a mile race can overcome that. I possess strong finishing speed and the advantage of a home crowd. Jake Wightman represented the main unknown. He is a superb runner who finishes strongly. Yet I could not envision other issues. Several excellent 1500m performers exist today, including Timothy Cheruiyot and Cam Myers. Still, I sense I stand apart right now."

Kerr maintains such discipline that upon reaching his hotel at midnight, he marked the occasion with physiotherapy from his mother, Jill, and a meal prepared by his chef, Jameel Austin, plus exactly two chips. "We simply relaxed and talked for roughly an hour," Kerr says. "My friend and videographer Joey Youden brought fish and chips for the group. I enjoyed Jameel's cooking but sampled a couple of chips."

One might wonder if even a monk would find Kerr's routine too strict. He resides with his wife, Larimar, and their dog, Presidente, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, training at 1,626m above sea level and usually retiring by 8.30pm. "We keep things simple," he admits. "We live in the mountains near Albuquerque. I rise, train hard and rest early. I finish work by 5pm and my wife returns around 5.30pm. From then until our early bedtime we focus on unwinding."

Besides walking the dog, he enjoys audiobooks and podcasts. "I follow the For The Love of Rugby podcast along with some American sports shows," he says. "We rarely go out, and the local nightlife is limited." He wonders whether the world record will increase his visibility back home. "It will be curious upon our return," he says. "Yet Albuquerque shows limited interest in track and field. Still, it feels pleasant."

Kerr grows more open when discussing how his finest season developed. Much credit goes to his support team under coach Danny Mackey, which features a personal chef, nutritionist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, strength specialists, massage therapists and pacers. He also highlights adjustments made in 2026, such as daily rest from 2-4pm and red-light therapy.

His Thursday 10-mile run, previously at 6:40 per mile, now occurs at 5:50 to six-minute pace. On Sundays his 17-mile long run sometimes ends with a three-mile tempo or includes six minutes of increased effort three times. "We understand my body's limit before fatigue sets in, around 73 miles weekly," he says. "So we avoid extra volume and emphasize quality. The addition of two strength runs has improved season longevity."

"Adding training requires recovery from elsewhere. That led us to daily rest from 2-4pm and red-light use. These steps have preserved our health." Kerr yields to Mackey on training decisions. "Danny serves as the mastermind," he says. "We outline plans and I provide straightforward feedback. Removing ego from comments allows better guidance."

Kerr downplays immediate chances of breaking Hicham El Guerrouj's 1500m record of 3:26.00, suggesting it may wait until 2027. His schedule includes the world indoor 3,000m title in March, the mile record and Commonwealth gold within two weeks. "I do not fear losing this form," he says. "I will claim the 1500m world record someday. Yet we must choose wisely in coming weeks. It seems unlikely this year."

When asked what running has shown him about life, given his steady rise from non-prodigy to champion, he pauses. "That is a thoughtful question," he says. "I remain an ordinary person. My early results and yearly progress reflect that. We always noted that few recall Under-13 or Under-15 Scottish champions. We aimed to win on race day but kept a long-term view. Determination, consistent training, injury avoidance and smart choices allow success."

The Guardian account of Kerr's gold-medal race led the website on Sunday morning. When told that most comments celebrated his win while some questioned the lack of free-to-air BBC One coverage, he responds, "I will not complain about what we lack. Strong performances and solid numbers will earn attention. We must keep promoting our sport. Events that belong on BBC One appear there. We still have progress to make."

Kerr sees track and field moving forward and cites the $150,000 winner's prize at the Ultimate Championships as progress. "How long did the world championships offer only $70,000? How long has the world record bonus stood at $50,000? Thirty or forty years? World Athletics is advancing, yet we must encourage more direct matchups. The Diamond League struggles because it cannot gather all top sprinters and middle-distance runners on one start line."

Kerr supported Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track but lost expected earnings when it folded after three meets. "I feel fortunate and do not mind for myself," he says. "Yet some athletes without sponsorships or holding other jobs never received their $100,000 winnings."

Before parting, Kerr addresses the podium tears. "Yes, a few appeared," he says. Asked what crossed his mind, he replies, "Media asked about the 1500m world record next. I simply wanted to savor the Scotland flag. Sport pushes us onward quickly. After my first major world title in 2023, everything moved rapidly. I reminded myself to slow down and appreciate the moment, since tomorrow is never assured." This outlook sustains Kerr at the sport's peak, even as he recognizes ample time remains in his career.
