Jaxon resides in the quiet Pembrokeshire village of Solva and goes to school in St Davids, far from any major skateboarding scene, which requires frequent five-hour round journeys to practice at a facility near Cardiff.

Yet his talent on the board was already clear well before arriving in west Wales. Born in Darwin, his passion for the activity showed strongly by the time his family relocated to Somerset when he was 18 months old.

"Just before he turned one we visited a surf shop where he became obsessed with a skateboard on display," recalled his Welsh mother Lucy.

"He refused to let go of it so we purchased the item as his first birthday gift. He kept attempting to stand on it and that marked the beginning of everything."

Jaxon was just five when casual practice turned into a drive to develop skills and enter competitions.

His status as an emerging talent quickly spread past the west country, and although the relocation to Wales has added travel demands it has not reduced his commitment.

Visits to a skatepark in Haverfordwest frequently lead other users to pause their sessions and watch the young rider perform on the ramps.

A six-month return to Australia during 2025 boosted his progress. While staying on the Sunshine Coast Jaxon trained and competed using equipment far superior to what was available at home.

Despite clear talent the nine-year-old was previously considered too young for the Welsh Championships and only now qualifies to join professional riders in national competitions.

Regarding his aims at Newquay he faces three initial heats followed by three more runs should he reach the final. The young competitor appears determined to do more than simply participate.

"I want to complete a full run without falling for the full 45 seconds allowed to demonstrate ability," he explained.

"Achieving that could help me reach the final among the top eight."

His targets extend further and Jaxon draws motivation from the athletic achievements connected to his local area.

He shares a village with former Tottenham and Wales player Simon Davies while his school Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi already counts two Olympians among its alumni in rugby sevens athlete Jasmine Joyce and sailor Mickey Beckett.

"Reaching the Olympics would be incredible," Jaxon stated.

"It stands as a target worth pursuing. I realize I remain too young for Los Angeles yet I hope to compete in the Games when they return to Australia. Still I understand substantial effort lies ahead."

The ambition must wait until 2032 and the Brisbane Games since he will not meet the minimum age of 14 required for Los Angeles in two years.

Attention now centers on Newquay. Regardless of background or future results observers across Wales should remember the name Jaxon Popovic.
