Last week an ESPN post-match discussion spread widely online after the presenter proposed that rival Champions League managers might want to physically strike Arteta, with the other guests agreeing as if this were a sensible idea worth full tactical review.

Among opposing supporters the view has settled that Arsenal represent the villains. Neutral observers should back Manchester City for the title and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, since that outcome would feel cleaner and better for the game. It is certainly a striking stance, one that fully accepts the showmanship of sport where style and image override other factors. PSG may function as a state-backed project that harms domestic competition and relies on vast funding from authoritarian sources. But yes, Désiré Doué looks stylish. So that settles it.

In truth Arsenal stands as a solid top-level football operation. If wealthy clubs must exist, this shows one workable approach. Build income internally. Follow financial regulations. Avoid debts tied to questionable backers. And yes, the stadium carries the Emirates name. Also, no thanks, the Rwanda plan holds no appeal. Yet inside the bounds of an imperfect system, this may come closest to a responsible major club.

Even so Arsenal often face criticism as an example of everything wrong. It is at least useful to examine why. He has somehow made Pep Guardiola appear calm and detached, walking in his countryside-green trousers like a parent at a school event. But does any of this justify anger?

Somewhat half-heartedly one searches for deeper causes. Does the dislike of Arsenal tie to London, since many also resent the capital? Is this linked to Brexit? Arsenal represent the most cosmopolitan, EU-oriented, London-focused club. Do people resent them for seeming economically privileged, middle-class in tone and slightly self-satisfied, both anxious and boastful? Yet if so, why do other London supporters also dislike them, although everyone resents the other major London sides for similar reasons of grandeur, half-finished projects, and excess cash?

Or perhaps it is not anger at all but weariness with the display, annoyance at the energetic coach and the more vocal online supporters. Either way the coming days will bring clarity. If Arsenal cannot overcome a relegated Burnley side and a Crystal Palace team in sunglasses and tie-dye, they probably do not merit the title. Yet there remains the chance the campaign ends in the long-feared collapse, with hamster celebrations and an endless feast of rival glee.

In the end it is difficult to escape the basic point: people simply enjoy disliking things these days. The content machine needs filling. Our connected digital world, the constant voices, is built to find, reward, and spread anger.
