Replacement fly-half Ben Donaldson was unable to land a final penalty kick as Ireland secured a bonus-point win in a gripping Nations Championship encounter in Sydney.

With time expired Donaldson sent his effort wide of the posts leaving the Wallabies without a victory against Ireland since 2018.

A 77th-minute score from substitute prop Tom Clarkson proved crucial for the visitors who earned a hard-fought success despite not reaching their peak performance levels.

Joe Schmidt's side held a five-point advantage at half-time following tries by Dylan Pietsch, Jock Campbell, Josh Canham and Ryan Lonergan during an energetic opening period.

Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier and Jamison Gibson-Park touched down for Ireland before the interval while Hugo Keenan added the bonus-point score before Tate McDermott responded for Australia.

Ireland were denied a fifth try when Dan Sheehan's effort was disallowed after a TMO review but Clarkson crossed for his second Test try to seal a tense win for Andy Farrell's team.

Ireland already missing Mack Hansen suffered another blow an hour before kick-off when Rob Baloucoune was ruled out with a hamstring issue and replaced by Jimmy O'Brien.

Although Ireland showed only flashes of their best in the first half Australia displayed sharpness and unity in a marked improvement from their November defeat in Dublin.

The hosts struck early when Pietsch scored in the third minute after Campbell kept the move alive with a quick pass.

Carter Gordon missed the conversion but Ireland responded to take the lead through Sam Prendergast's conversion of his brother Cian's try.

The Wallabies stayed composed and regained the advantage when Campbell scored on his first Test appearance in four years.

Van der Flier replied after captain Sheehan flicked the ball into his path from a tap-and-go penalty near the line.

Australia maintained pressure and Canham crashed over following a powerful carry by Rob Valetini that disrupted the Irish defence.

Sam Prendergast then threw an intercept pass to Max Jorgensen who raced clear and set up Lonergan for the bonus-point try.

Although Australia deserved their half-time lead Ireland gained momentum late in the first period to reduce the deficit to five points.

Gibson-Park darted through to score after Keenan produced a fine tackle to deny Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii a certain try.

Ireland display resilience in tense conclusion

Ireland missing captain Caelan Doris and fly-half Jack Crowley looked refreshed after the break and regained the lead when Keenan scored on his first appearance since the 2025 Six Nations.

However the visitors switched off defensively allowing replacement scrum-half McDermott to cross from a quick tap-and-go penalty.

That proved Australia's final score on 53 minutes as Farrell's players found renewed energy.

Despite line-out issues Sheehan thought he had scored his 21st international try but it was ruled out after James Ryan was penalised for obstructing Valetini.

With ten minutes left Donaldson missed a penalty that would have extended Australia's lead to 34-26.

With Tadhg Beirne making an impact after entering on 52 minutes Ireland pressed for a late score and Clarkson burrowed over for a try converted by Sam Prendergast.

That gave Ireland a two-point lead but Bundee Aki conceded a penalty handing the Wallabies a chance to win.

Despite his earlier miss Donaldson attempted the kick from a narrow angle on the right but it drifted wide sparking celebrations as outgoing coach Schmidt was denied victory against his former team.

Farrell's side next face Japan in Newcastle while Australia host France.
