LAS VEGAS - When Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour raised the Stanley Cup on Sunday night, he greeted an old companion.

Two decades had passed since Brind'Amour became the first Hurricanes player to lift the trophy, leading Carolina to the 2006 title as a 34-year-old veteran in his 17th NHL campaign.

He spent 15 more seasons waiting to hoist it again from behind the bench in a suit: Brind'Amour stands as just the seventh figure in NHL annals to claim the Cup both as a player and head coach for one franchise, and the first since 1956. He ranks as the 14th person overall to achieve the feat with any club.

Across the rink in Las Vegas, surrounded by embraces and emotion from skaters and relatives, general manager Eric Tulsky celebrated his initial Stanley Cup triumph, a path he could never have imagined two decades earlier.

When Brind'Amour raised the Cup in 2006, Tulsky was examining cadmium-free nanocrystals for medical uses as a researcher at a nanotech firm in Washington state. An NHL career never crossed his mind amid those scientific pursuits.

"It remains astonishing that I arrived here. I cannot explain how it unfolded," Tulsky said. "I never expected this chance. Yet the coach and players delivered us to this point."

Brind'Amour and Tulsky form the NHL's classic mismatch. One is a hockey veteran in his 35th year as player or coach, while the other's route began in a hockey blog's comment threads. A renowned conditioning enthusiast called "Rod the Bod," still stronger than many of his athletes, pairs with a data analytics expert who leaves no trace in online hockey records.

Inspirational team talks meet cool statistical reviews of talent. The Selke winner alongside the nanotech researcher.

In blunt terms: the athlete and the analyst.

"It seems like yin and yang," forward Jordan Martinook said with a chuckle. "Yet in marriages, opposites often draw together. Perhaps that is what we required. The contrasting minds. And together they produce something special."

Neither could claim the Cup alone this year. Brind'Amour supplied drive, precision and deep bonds with his roster. Tulsky contributed sharp roster moves, bold deals and the grace to adjust after a rare setback. Both listened and relied on each other despite their different histories.

All of it propelled the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup.

"They complement one another effectively, which stands out as the strongest element. Tulsky excels with figures. Roddy has coached here and played here," Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis said.

"No offense to Eric, but Roddy could probably overpower him physically if he chose. I am not suggesting he would. But he could."

TULSKY AND BRIND'AMOUR differ at times yet share a cooperative approach and deep regard. They agree on the player types needed for a system that delivers the analytics Tulsky values and the physical style Brind'Amour demands.

Ultimately, the trade-maker and the tactician hold a shared belief that guided Carolina to its first championship in 20 years.

"Rod has the group attacking hard on the ice. We aim to attack boldly off it as well," the general manager said.

Tulsky grew up following sports in Philadelphia. He cheered Mike Schmidt and the Phillies at The Vet and occasionally shouts "Go Birds!" in NFL season. His Flyers loyalty stays quiet, essential when employed by another NHL club - one that eliminated Philadelphia in the playoffs this year.

Still, the Flyers played a key role in Tulsky's uncommon background.

Hurricanes staff call him a "genius" sincerely. He earned a B.A. in chemistry and physics from Harvard plus a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed two years of post-doctoral work at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., focusing on new colloidal nanoparticles.

Tulsky worked roughly a dozen years in technology. He served as a scientist at Life Technologies in the Pacific Northwest, then relocated to the Bay Area to explore nanoscience for solar cells. His notable research involved shrinking materials until they emit light, better known today as quantum dots in QLED screens.

Tulsky owns 27 U.S. patents, several now in or nearing commercial use, as he noted in 2024.

While in the Bay Area around 2010, Tulsky found Broad Street Hockey, a site covering the Flyers. Like similar blogs then, it offered data-focused takes to balance traditional reporting. This opened hockey to Tulsky in a fresh way.

He posted comments as "Eric T," with insights sharper than typical replies. Tulsky built a tool to pull shot data from NHL reports and applied it in discussions.

"Those were early stages in the area, with much still to develop," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer in May. "Soon I wanted to tackle some of those questions myself."

Quickly, "Eric T." advanced from commenter to staff writer at Broad Street Hockey, gaining notice as an insightful analyst. Yahoo Sports labeled him "hockey stat nerd elite." He later launched NHL Numbers and spoke at the 2013 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference on zone entry data.

From that talk: "A team's shot differential, a solid win predictor, forms mostly in the neutral zone. Success there goes beyond extra entries; carrying the puck over the blue line creates over twice the shots, chances and goals compared to dumping it in, making possession entries vital."

That echoes the approach of a certain new champion.

The Hurricanes hired Tulsky as a remote consultant in 2014 while he lived in the Bay Area. Three years later he became manager of hockey analytics. The next year brought promotion to VP of hockey management and strategy. In 2020 he advanced to assistant general manager under Don Waddell.

This was not the career the nanotech expert had planned. Yet Tulsky joined a wave of numbers specialists entering NHL front offices.

John Chayka became the league's youngest GM at 26 in 2016 with the Arizona Coyotes. Toronto named 32-year-old Kyle Dubas GM in 2018 after he built a strong analytics group. (The Leafs hired Chayka as GM last month.) Tyler Dellow, now assistant GM under Tulsky, consulted on analytics for Edmonton before joining New Jersey as senior VP of hockey strategy and analytics in 2019.

(Tulsky and Dellow share similar roots: Dellow was a lawyer known online as "Mudcrutch" who ran the mc79hockey blog. He gained notice for decoding redacted NHL emails in a 2010 controversy.)

It appeared only a question of timing before Tulsky would become an NHL general manager. He interviewed with Chicago and Pittsburgh. Then in 2024 an opening arose when Waddell stepped down in Carolina to lead Columbus.

Many expected Tulsky to step up right away, but owner Tom Dundon took time to review choices. Less than a month later the logical move followed: Eric Tulsky - chemistry Ph.D., nanotechnology specialist, ex-blogger - was named Hurricanes GM.

"When Don departed we wondered about the direction," Martinook recalled. "We did not see Eric often while Don was here. We knew of him - other clubs inquired - yet he has built a strong foundation for our success."

Jarvis could not recall his first thought on the hiring but knew one fact.

"I knew he was exceptionally bright," he said. "And that quality can be rare in hockey."

Especially when it means adjusting after front-office errors. Tulsky made a notable one in 2025. His response helped deliver the championship.

IN HIS FIRST summer as GM, Tulsky contacted all 31 peers about trades. Talks with Colorado surfaced a big name: star winger Mikko Rantanen, sixth in NHL scoring over the prior three seasons and set to hit free agency after 2024-25.

One barrier to Cup contention had been missing timely goals in the postseason. Entering this spring, Carolina ranked eighth in playoff scoring (minimum 50 games) since Brind'Amour's arrival in 2018-19 at 2.89 goals per game - below their regular-season mark of 3.22 over that stretch.

Scoring dipped further in later rounds. Across 13 prior conference-final games, the Hurricanes averaged just 1.61 goals in losses to Boston (2019) and Florida (2023, 2025).

Tulsky and Waddell addressed this with a major 2024 deadline deal for Jake Guentzel from Pittsburgh, a proven scorer with 34 playoff goals in 58 games. Guentzel netted four in 11 postseason contests before Carolina fell to the Rangers in round two. The team tried to re-sign him, but the free agent chose Tampa Bay.

Had Guentzel remained, Tulsky might have skipped the Rantanen trade. Without him, the need for a playoff scorer persisted. Talks with Vancouver about J.T. Miller surfaced, but on Jan. 24, 2025, Carolina acquired Rantanen from Colorado.

One of Tulsky's principles is "we embrace risks," and this deal carried plenty since Rantanen could walk in summer. "Carolina will look foolish if they exit early and he departs," an agent told ESPN then.

Yet Rantanen never played a playoff game for Carolina. He appeared in only 13 regular-season contests for six points. Tulsky and Dundon believed they could secure an extension with a large offer and Finnish teammates like Sebastian Aho. They were surprised when Rantanen declined to stay in Raleigh after several players had signed long-term deals there, including Jarvis and Jaccob Slavin.
