The Green Party achieved unprecedented success in last week's local and national elections, leading its deputy leader Zack Polanski to declare that two-party dominance is "over". Bookmaker Ladbrokes responded by shortening the odds on the Greens securing the most seats in the next general election to 12-1, with an outright majority at 28-1.

These odds suggest it is improbable yet not out of reach. A Green majority carries similar pricing to Moon Chime, victor of Haydock's major handicap hurdle last Saturday. Regardless of final seat tallies, the party's influence in the upcoming parliament - in three years or sooner - will undoubtedly amplify.

Recent statements from prominent Greens indicate a firm anti-racing stance, marking a pivotal moment for Britain's second-largest spectator sport.

As reported by The Sun on its front page two weeks ago, Polanski advocated removing "all animals from sport" on social media platform X in 2024.

Hannah Spencer, the newly elected MP for Gorton and Denton, called last month for "a conversation" on racing, shortly after two fatal horse injuries at the Grand National.

"A conversation needs to happen about horse racing," Spencer stated. "We all witnessed those horrific images of a horse raced to death for gambling profits. That discussion is imminent. Attitudes are changing. Constituents are telling me horse racing is no longer acceptable."

This raises a key issue: who will shape this dialogue? Only Greens and activists, or also the 80,000 jobs reliant on racing? What of the fans purchasing almost 5 million race tickets yearly?

Spencer's words echo animal rights rhetoric, implying any human use of animals is unethical and that loving racehorses precludes racing them - their bred purpose.

The term "raced to death" is revealing. No intent exists to harm horses, though a minimal risk accompanies competition, which racing actively works to reduce.

Racing differs from blood sports. Flat racing fatality rate stands at one per 1,000 starts; over jumps, five per 1,000. Unlike livestock slaughtered for food - arguably for human amusement - racehorses are not bred to perish.

The British Horse Racing Authority values racing at £4 billion yearly to the economy. Though some Greens may dismiss it, the sport delivers joy and community to millions at tracks nationwide.

Political opposition to racing is longstanding. In 1878, MP Thomas Blake for Forest of Dean decried it as "an amusement... causing enormous evil... with distress from speculation and gambling at horse races".

Blake spoke during the June adjournment debate before the Derby, when MPs often approved a break to attend Epsom.

His critique targeted gambling over welfare but mirrored Spencer's abolitionist sentiment.

150 years on, racing thrives. It seems poised to endure centuries more, whatever political shifts arise.

Yet racing must perpetually showcase welfare initiatives. It need not dread such "conversations".

Conducting them prior to the next election would clarify Green intentions, enabling fans and workers to vote informedly.
