Last Saturday evening in Manchester, 28-year-old supply teacher Zak Chelli from Fulham pulled off one of the year's biggest boxing shocks by stopping Cuba's highly regarded David Morrell in a dramatic and unexpected finish. Chelli stepped in just two weeks before the bout and, despite the short notice, showed he was more than ready for the challenge.

Morrell led on the judges' cards, but Chelli rocked him hard in the ninth. In the decisive 10th round, Mr. Chelli - as his students call him - unleashed a ferocious barrage until the referee stepped in to save Morrell.

An elated Chelli pointed out he had achieved what even David Benavidez couldn't. Morrell's previous career defeat came last year against the dominant Benavidez via decision. Still, Morrell had floored the intimidating Benavidez, enhancing his own standing in the sport.

In a tale that inspires supply teachers nationwide, Chelli's triumph over Morrell offers an uplifting boxing narrative reminiscent of Rocky, though with distinct twists. While Rocky Balboa prepared by slamming fists into sides of beef at a meatpacking plant, Chelli received an enthusiastic farewell from his class at Thomas Knyvett secondary school in Surrey.

"I told the kids: 'I won't be here next week - I'll be in Manchester for fight week,'" Chelli recalls. "I showed them David Morrell, and they said: 'Sir, you better win or don't return - it'll be embarrassing.' I replied: 'I know.'"

Chelli turns momentarily thoughtful, then chuckles about his early teaching errors. "My first big lesson as a supply teacher was not to be too cheerful. Never smile - the students will test you relentlessly. They figure they can push boundaries with a substitute. Now I keep a firm, confident demeanor, never acting overly upbeat, or they exploit it."

He agrees when I note the similarity to a boxer's pre-fight stare-down. "You must psych them out mentally before the bell, just like with pupils. Show them you're the one running things."

Chelli dominated his savage masterclass against Morrell, but the intensity of his task hits home knowing he's currently on vacation. Unaware of the Morrell matchup, he booked a trip a month prior to Tunisia - birthplace of his father and trainer, Zak Sr. - with his wife Eliza and 18-month-old daughter. Their departure followed the fight by just one day.

The light-heavyweight boasts 16 wins from 20 pro fights and prior British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles. No journeyman, it's astonishing he toppled a talent like Morrell on short notice while juggling a full-time job. The world-level opportunity arose when Callum Smith, set to face Morrell on April 18, got hurt. Chelli accepted the slot on the undercard of the Dubois-Wardley heavyweight clash.

"I train with my dad post-school for four hours," he explains. "He's always preached that chances arise unexpectedly in boxing. Stay ready, be patient. When Smith pulled out, Dad blasted social media: 'Put my son in - he's the guy.'

"We didn't expect much, but on April 27, the call came confirming the fight. I locked in for two weeks and posted online: 'I'm knocking him out, inshallah.'"

Chelli's confidence stemmed from his power surge at light-heavyweight. "I've been dropping sparring partners. I knew my right hand could floor anyone clean."

Urgency fueled him too. "I needed this win for my wife and daughter - boxing paid nothing for two years since losing to Callum Simpson in Barnsley. I'd give it all, even short an arm or leg."

Down on points, Chelli observed early flaws. "His jab missed constantly; I slipped it and he targeted the body. My rights landed, and the commentator wondered why he retreated. I hurt him.

"I felt I took rounds, but pro scoring favors champs. Without a knockout, they might rob me. I closed the gap; Dad yelled: 'Unleash the right - give him the pain.' I obliged."

No time for prolonged celebration: "We drove four hours back to London for my flight. Watching the KO clip, I thought: 'Wow, I look ferocious.'"

Chelli sifted through thousands of messages. "I'm responding to every one - I owe them that. My profile hit 1.2 million views; it's wild."

He eyes a Smith matchup and world title dreams but vows to keep teaching. Chelli started during Covid at his Italian mother's urging for stability, resuming seriously post-Simpson loss.

"I cover any subject from GCSE to A-level across schools. I earned 20 GCSEs to maximize options, then a business management degree."

Boxing and academics shape Chelli and brother Yahia. "Dad trained us young - photos show me in gloves at one week old. He boxed pro; we both won ABA titles. Yahia, a GB champ, chose academia and now holds a mechanical engineering PhD."

Do pupils always engage? "One troublemaker often leads others, but I pull them aside. Usually home issues or confusion; targeted help flips them. Sometimes the stern voice works on boys: 'Sit, bags off desk, or principal's called.' Mostly smooth.

"I coach boxing for kids with behavioral or special needs - boosts confidence, communication. Patience pays; they're hitting goals and loving it. Life-changing for them, fulfilling for me."

His wife handles Chelsea FC marketing; with their daughter, they balance. "She works home three days; I teach three, box two, train nightly."

Recognition poses challenges. "Once kids know, the school buzzes. As a supply, I switch sites. One term at a school, corridors erupted: 'Hi, Mr. Chelli!' Whispers of 'the boxer' made it hectic."

He seems to crave low profile. "Yes, I use 'Mr. Jones' and hide the boxing - it gets chaotic otherwise."

Mr. Chelli resumes at Thomas Knyvett next Thursday, fame unavoidable. "Hope it's not too rowdy," he grins. "If calm and I can teach, I'm content."
