Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy stood beside his squad after they dismantled Los Angeles across four straight National League Championship Series contests. Inside the Dodger Stadium clubhouse, he prepared to mark the moment. Yet before opening the champagne and releasing celebratory foam, Murphy shared a pointed remark.

"They have a collection of Hall of Famers. We have a group of gamers."

Murphy had pinned the Dodgers in place, closing out a powerhouse that entered 2026 aiming to become the first NL club to claim three consecutive World Series crowns.

He also delivered the ideal postgame address.

The Dodgers are finished, while Milwaukee made history by becoming the first club to reverse an NLCS sweep against the identical opponent the following year.

Creating history appears routine for these Brewers, who posted a franchise-record 103 regular-season wins and then unseated a squad that looked destined to launch baseball's first genuine dynasty since 2000.

Milwaukee turned LA into a squad of shadows, especially during Game 4. With the Dodgers clinging to a 4-0 edge and trying to stir the crowd, the Brewers began their push. Once more Jake Bauers delivered the decisive blow. In Game 2 he frustrated Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto with a 12-pitch walk that ignited a vital rally. In Game 3 he worked an 11-pitch battle against two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell and ended it with a franchise-shaping homer. In the fourth inning of Game 4, Bauers doubled off starter Tyler Glasnow to halve the lead. One inning later the veteran infielder, who delayed retirement this year for health coverage ahead of his child's birth, drew a bases-loaded walk to knot the score. Garrett Mitchell's solo homer in the sixth gave Milwaukee the lead that held. A classic three-inning save from Aaron Ashby sealed the result.

Milwaukee now advances to its first World Series since 1982. Time remains to celebrate the Brew Crew while awaiting the American League foe, either the Tampa Bay Rays or Cleveland Guardians. First comes the farewell.

The compact, youthful, athletic and fundamentally sharp Brewers exposed Los Angeles's stars as aged, listless and ineffective. Though the outcome feels abrupt, signs pointed this way throughout the year.

The Dodgers, a club with every resource and deeper pockets than most, won 100 games yet finished just 38-37 versus teams above .500 and grounded into an MLB-high 128 double plays. In several respects they resembled another costly yet flawed coastal giant: the New York Yankees. The Bronx club also dominated weaker sides while faltering against stronger ones. Both teams are now eliminated; baseball tends to expose flaws even in a postseason some label a lottery.

Perhaps most striking was the collapse of baseball's biggest star, Shohei Ohtani. The sport's premier two-way player showed fatigue late in the season. Injuries first ended his pitching. Then he went without a homer from late August until Thursday. Ohtani insisted skill alone limited him, yet he dropped to sixth in the order for Game 3, a move rarely made with an elite player in his prime unless problems exist. In the seventh inning of Game 4, with Kiké Hernández 90 feet from tying the score, Ohtani swung through an Ashby slider that missed the plate by a wide margin. The four-time MVP was not alone. Former MVP Mookie Betts managed little, and former MVP Freddie Freeman managed even less. The lineup posted a .590 OPS for the series while the pitching stayed inconsistent.

Afterward manager Dave Roberts, outmanaged by Murphy throughout, told Fox that "the great thing about this game is you can try your hardest and want it most, yet nothing is assured."

That observation captures the Dodgers' situation and baseball's larger truth: nothing is assured. Not after signing Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz for a combined $309 million in the offseason. Not after acquiring Cy Young winner Tariq Skubal at the deadline. Not after committing $340 million overall. The Dodgers' payroll exceeds the combined total of the Rays, Guardians and Brewers, the club that eliminated "the team that destroyed baseball."

Thus the Dodgers, ever in the spotlight, depart with fresh questions. The immediate one: how will they adjust and rebuild? The larger ones: can critics still claim they wrecked baseball when the Brewers and their 19th-ranked payroll just dismantled them? Is baseball, a contest blending skill and chance that always leaves room for surprise, truly a level field where smaller budgets can challenge big spenders? Are massive payrolls and star-studded rosters the decisive factors for title contention? How far can smart front-office work offset limited resources? In short: who can locate the gamers when Hall of Famers remain out of reach?
