Glenn Irwin is determined to reclaim a leading position in the British Superbike Championship, as his new role with Michael Laverty's BMW-supported squad offers renewed drive heading into 2027.

The 12-time North West 200 Superbike race winner will compete aboard an Alpha Racing-prepared BMW M 1000 RR for the GRYD Racing outfit, which is jointly owned by Laverty and David Eltherington.

The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland concedes that 2026 fell short of expectations, with injuries, spills, mechanical problems and challenges adapting to Ducati's latest Panigale V4R all contributing to a disrupted title bid.

Although he delivered highlights such as a podium finish at Knockhill and strong results at the North West 200, Irwin spent much of a difficult season seeking solutions and concluded the year in 14th place overall.

The Carrickfergus competitor has previously achieved second place in BSB on two occasions, coming within half a point of then-teammate Tommy Bridewell in 2023.

"It has been a difficult period," he noted of his 2026 season during an appearance on the BBC Bikes podcast.

"There were times when uncertainty crept in, which is common for any athlete, yet there were also instances this year when it became clear those doubts were misplaced."

Such uncertainty extended to his career path ahead.

Following a season that did not meet his usual standards, Irwin acknowledged worries about securing a suitable 2027 opening.

Nevertheless, the prospect of linking up with Michael Laverty's team alongside Englishman Storm Stacey quickly persuaded him this was the reset he required.

"Storm is an excellent teammate," Irwin continued.

"I am eager to learn from him while also sharing my own insights."

The North West 200 played a key role in Irwin's choice.

The event holds special significance for the County Antrim rider, who sought equipment able to challenge at the front in both British Superbikes and road racing events.

BMW's established performance at the NW200 circuit, together with Stacey's strong record there, added further appeal to the switch.

Although enthusiasm surrounds the new venture, Irwin recognises the challenges ahead, yet he remains convinced that his experience, restored belief and fresh beginning can return him to victory.

"Naturally, results are essential," he remarked.

"Younger riders are emerging and you can either yield or compete for your position.

Consider figures such as Leon Haslam and Tommy Bridewell. It is possible to keep improving in this sport. If you wish to remain involved, that is what is required.

"The standards are clear because we understand our capabilities. We have achieved success previously and can do so once more."
