An Irishman and a Frenchman meet in an Irish pub in Lille on a damp Saturday afternoon.

This scene captures the essence of connection, community and embracing a fresh sporting pursuit.

Gaelic games have long extended past their Irish origins, with clubs established in London, the USA, Africa and Australia.

Yet mainland Europe stands out as the area of strongest current expansion.

Turnbull, originally from Dublin, has participated in GAA activities throughout his life.

After moving to Lille in northern France in 2020 with few local contacts, he searched for a GAA club and came across Lille GAA.

Started in 2013 by two Lille residents following a visit to Ireland, the club forms part of 35 teams now active in France.

"I showed up expecting mostly Irish players plus a handful of French ones, mainly as a chance to meet people," Turnbull explained.

"But I turned out to be the only Irish participant at the session, so watching 20 French players train in the rain on a Wednesday evening feels truly unusual."

Yann Boudjennah, a local who developed a passion for the sport, followed a different path.

A dedicated football supporter, Boudjennah first encountered Gaelic games during a Dublin trip and, via a French-Irish acquaintance, attended Lille GAA training five years ago to explore the activity.

"It remains a niche pursuit in France, a nation dominated by football and rugby along with basketball and handball.

"Athletes from these varied disciplines come together in Gaelic football sides.

"The game blends elements from multiple team sports that hold strong cultural value in France, which supports our progress."

Gaelic Games Europe reports 40 percent membership growth across the continent over five years, with club numbers reaching 110.

Europe now counts 6,000 participants, an all-time peak driven largely by rising youth involvement.

While Brittany serves as the main hub in France, clubs have emerged in cities including Lille, Paris and Bordeaux.

Due to this progress in Brittany, Gaelic games feature in many local school programs.

Games often involve 11 players or fewer on modified football or rugby fields fitted with extra goalpost poles, though full 15-a-side matches occur at larger clubs.

At Lille GAA, as Turnbull noted, occasional students or exchange workers visit, yet he remains the sole permanent Irish member.

Like the club's founders, all others are local participants.

In contrast to the USA or England where Irish players frequently lead clubs, nearly 95 percent of French members are locals.

Ladies Gaelic football growth proves vital, with almost 2,000 members now across Europe.

Camogie numbers have doubled in two years, and 74 percent of European clubs include women's Gaelic games sections.

While Lille women previously joined men's sessions, numbers are increasing and a regional side has formed.

"French enthusiasts who simply enjoy the game drive the club forward," Turnbull added.

"People seek something new and think, 'this is an Irish sport I have not encountered, yet I will try it'.

"They often hold favorable views of Irish culture already, so interest comes naturally."

France's geography poses major challenges for development, which Turnbull describes as quite involved for Lille.

As in Ireland, Gaelic games remain amateur, requiring players and clubs to cover travel costs, often via car shares on eight or nine hour trips to events.

Rather than weekly fixtures common in Ireland or with football and rugby in France, several tournaments occur over four or five weekends yearly, with multiple matches played across two days at one site.

Brittany, with more clubs, runs its own regional league as an exception.

The Euro Gaelic Games pit top regional European sides against each other, while the World Games gather 2,000 players globally every three years and occur from 13-17 July in Waterford.

Boudjennah plays Gaelic football for Lille and has spent two years training as a referee, a role he previously held in football.

He officiated at the 2025 Euro Games held at Vannes rugby stadium before 2,500 spectators, yet competition weekends provide extra excitement in his schedule.

"It allows full weekends with teammates, differing from a single match and return home," said Boudjennah, calling the experience an adventure.

"There are the games, occasional hotel snoring, yet you share beyond mere play, leaving you tired upon return but in a positive way."

Turnbull described participation in France as a significant commitment, particularly for those with families, yet rewarding to witness locals embrace the sport from his youth.

"Once tried in France, people adopt it rapidly and display clear enthusiasm," Turnbull said.

"Their readiness to dedicate entire weekends to matches stands out as truly notable."
