In a storybook finish at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Collen Kebinatshipi overtook South Africa's Zakithi Nene in the closing stretch to secure the men's 4x400m relay victory for Botswana. Fans dressed in light blue filled the stands and erupted in celebration.

Letsile Tebogo, the 22-year-old Olympic 200m champion who competed on the second leg, shared with journalists: "This victory holds immense significance for us - not only the team, but for everyone supporting from home via television. Today, they witnessed up close the dedication, intensity, and commitment we bring for them."

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, speaking post-event, remarked: "That electric atmosphere ranks among the top three I've felt in person at track meets. Number one was Cathy Freeman's Sydney triumph. Number two was Mo Farah surging ahead with about a lap left in London's 10,000m amid a thunderous roar. This one easily claims a spot in my top three."

Botswana, spanning an area bigger than Spain but home to only 2.5 million residents, has skyrocketed in men's sprinting. Tebogo's 2024 Paris Olympic gold marked the nation's first ever, alongside its fourth medal overall. The men's 4x400m relay earned silver, building on prior bronze. At last year's Tokyo world championships, Kebinatshipi claimed 400m gold, with the relay team he closed out also victorious.

These athletes dominate Botswana's cultural landscape, featuring on billboards for products ranging from phone plans to dairy. Ahead of the relays, Kebinatshipi noted at a press event: "My life has transformed significantly."

The 22-year-old, who began running in school, now budgets 30 minutes for fan photos during outings. "Initially, it made me anxious since it was unfamiliar. Now, I'm comfortable with it," he added.

Sports leaders credit sustained funding for young talent as key to Botswana's achievements. Botswana Athletics Association CEO Mabua Mabua stated: "Credit goes to our former school sports initiatives, as most emerging stars hail from those programs."

He praised local facilities too: "Team preparations happen entirely at home. Many insist on Europe or U.S. camps, but we rely on domestic coaches and settings."

The Botswana National Sports Commission supports 15 disciplines to discover and develop prospects. Re Ba Bona Ha - 'We See Them Here' in Setswana - began as a youth coaching effort for ages five to 13 in soccer in 2002, expanding to athletics in 2008. Around 300 kids join annual athletics clinics, per BNSC sports development manager Frederick Kebadiretse.

Additionally, biannual vacation camps scout teens for eight sports excellence hubs established in 2011. These offer after-school and weekend sessions, selecting 30-40 for athletics each year.

Leaders caution that halting the school sports program in 2019 amid government-teacher tensions endangers progress. World relays committee chair Martin Mokgwathi warned: "The talent pipeline has dried up. Results will decline without urgent action."

Botswana's women lag behind the men. Oratile Nowe, seventh globally in the 800m this year, leads female performers.

Officials acknowledge the need for greater female support. Mokgwathi urged: "Broaden participation to draw more girls in. Promote women as coaches and officials. Safeguard newcomers to ensure retention."

Isaac Makwala works to bolster these pathways. Cited as a role model by many youths, he pioneered sub-44-second 400m and sub-20-second 200m on the same day. Raised by farmers in northern Botswana, he ran casually in school but raced seriously at 21.

Post-2024 retirement, Makwala launched his athletics academy, training roughly 50 kids aged 12-16 in sprints five days weekly. "My daughter trains here - it motivates my coaching. I'm eager to see her potential. Did she inherit my speed?" he wondered.

This year, his daughter Resego Kelly Makwala, 14, won Botswana's under-18 girls' 400m title. "I love it - especially hitting fast times and personal bests," she enthused.

The academy depends on committed families covering 100 pula (£5.50) signup and 500 pula monthly costs. Tax worker Tuduetso Gaboutloeloe explained: "With the tough economy, I hope she earns scholarships to advance. Life is challenging now."

Her 13-year-old daughter Leloba, an 800m runner eyeing 400m, aspires to Olympic glory: "I picture myself claiming medals."
