Fury fell twice to Oleksandr Usyk in May and December 2024, and Joshua was floored four times before being halted by Daniel Dubois inside five rounds in September that year. Even with advancing age and another retirement announcement from Fury plus extended downtime for Joshua, the pair still aim to meet in a November showdown expected to generate well beyond $100m.

The substantial purse for a contest that peaked in interest eight years earlier ensures both British heavyweights will meet modest opposition on back-to-back days this weekend. Each requires a low-stakes warm-up to shed accumulated rust without unnecessary danger.

Fury opens proceedings on Friday night in Thailand, where roughly 1,500 spectators will observe him either dominate or engage in extended sparring with Mariusz Wach, a 46-year-old Polish veteran, in Pattaya. The event lacks television or streaming coverage. Fury remarked: "This great fight will not be streamed live. It will only be broadcast on my hit Netflix TV show At Home with the Furys season three."

This absence of broadcast removes any real tension from a bout that serves only to grant Fury several rounds against a slow-moving target. Wach remains a restricted technician who, 14 years earlier, challenged Wladimir Klitschko for a heavyweight crown and failed to claim a single round.

Since that time, he has absorbed 12 further defeats, most notably a second-round stoppage two years ago against Moses Itauma at age 19.

Fury prepared in Thailand for his return against Makhmudov and has grown fond of the nation. He pledged to direct all proceeds from Friday's exhibition toward "local starving and homeless children" and described it as "a beautiful thing I'm able to do here, giving back to a great cause".

In a gesture reminiscent of Gianni Infantino's approach, Mauricio Sulaimán Jr, WBC president, declared that Fury will receive their new Humanitarian title following the contest. Fury may ease his effort initially more to extend the workout than from concern for Wach.

Joshua's appearance carries greater weight as it signals progress in his recovery after the tragic incident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of close associates Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele shortly after Christmas. Questions arose over whether Joshua would resume boxing, yet he maintains his drive remains intact ahead of a bout against little-known Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga late Saturday in Jeddah.

"It's on Prenga, but it's also on Fury, because I want it all," Joshua stated regarding his mindset. "I believe I can become undisputed. I've still got the ambition and hunger. Let's keep rolling the dice, let's keep entertaining because this is our time."

These standard remarks have been echoed by promoters. Barry Hearn, Matchroom president, noted: "Prenga is dangerous, even if we don't know too much about him. But Joshua is a ferocious animal at the moment. Don't blink, look for fireworks. AJ is not taking anything for granted, he knows he's got a job to do, and he will be ruthlessly efficient. He's in the mood to cause an awful lot of pain."

The promoter continued: "AJ is in an amazing place. I don't think I've seen him look better than this in the 14 years I've known him - or look so motivated for the long term."

Barry's son Eddie, who heads the promotion, highlighted Joshua's resilience after personal loss: "Everyone's aware of what happened and, for me, this is one of the great comebacks. I know AJ is business as usual, but we're incredibly proud of what he's done to return to the ring, 99.9% of people would have given up because of the mental battle with grief. Physically, you've got to overcome all these hurdles. Yet mentally, you're broken. It's incredible. And we know the risks that are coming."

Dazn, adding a £19.99 pay-per-view charge for subscribers, promoted Prenga this week as an "unbeaten 21-0 knockout artist". Although all 20 of Prenga's wins ended inside the distance, he lost to Giovanni Auriemma, a Dutch fighter with just one other victory in 10 bouts. Prenga has met only obscure opponents, suggesting careful selection by Joshua's team.

Fury, in characteristic style, expressed doubts in Thailand on Wednesday that the Joshua fight will occur. He declined an invitation to attend ringside in Jeddah and labeled Joshua a "bottle job flapper and a chinless wonder". This represents standard Fury rhetoric and should not be viewed literally.

The Fury and Joshua momentum will proceed unaffected this weekend, particularly with significant sums dependent on the uneventful completion of these routine preparatory contests before the date and venue for the most overhyped bout in British boxing history are finally set.
