The career paths of French Open finalists Mirra Andreeva and Maja Chwalinska stand in sharp contrast.

Russian eighth seed Andreeva is a teenage talent who secured her opening WTA Tour victory at age 15 in 2023 and advanced to the Wimbledon fourth round shortly afterward.

Claiming a Grand Slam title has appeared inevitable ever since.

"I am moving nearer - I am becoming slightly more composed with each contest," said the 19-year-old Andreeva.

Qualifier Chwalinska reached Saturday's final at Roland Garros through an unexpected route.

The 24-year-old Pole has never gained automatic entry to a major main draw and succeeded in Grand Slam qualifying on just two prior occasions out of 14 tries.

Ranked 114th with limited background, Chwalinska's rise demonstrates the results of commitment and persistence.

"I feel as if I am in a dream. Everything seems unreal. I am simply thrilled to reach this point," said Chwalinska, a 500-1 longshot before the event began.

The teenage talent gaining from added composure

Andreeva's accomplishments in the past two weeks stand out in historical context.

The third-youngest Roland Garros finalist this century after 18-year-old Coco Gauff in 2022 and 17-year-old Kim Clijsters in 2001, Andreeva aims to become the youngest French Open winner since Monica Seles in 1992.

Originally from Siberia and coached in France, Andreeva has drawn attention for elite potential since her 2023 Madrid Open debut, where her skill and boldness earned notice from Andy Murray.

Her development quickened after hiring former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez as coach in 2024.

Martinez noted immediately that Andreeva possessed star quality.

Following a French Open semifinal appearance two years earlier, Andreeva advanced further in 2025 by capturing two WTA 1000 crowns and entering the top five.

A fiery temperament has occasionally highlighted her youth.

Certain actions, such as directing balls toward spectators, have neared improper conduct, and she faltered against French wildcard Lois Boisson in a charged quarterfinal last year.

Yet her composed victory over Ukrainian 15th seed Marta Kostyuk in Thursday's semifinal, amid political strain, reflected growing steadiness.

"At times I listened to Martinez while also following my own approach," said Andreeva, who has avoided top-10 opponents.

"Now I trust my team fully and it feels simpler. I follow their guidance without question."

The qualifier adjusting smoothly to elite competition

Chwalinska's run places pressure on Emma Raducanu's record as the sole qualifier to capture a Grand Slam, achieved at the 2021 US Open.

A win over Andreeva would match Raducanu as one of the most unforeseen major triumphs.

Chwalinska has mostly competed at lower professional levels, traveling to sustain her career.

After her second-round victory in Paris she worried about funding extra hotel stays.

Lacking personal sponsors, a Polish firm supporting six-time major winner Iga Swiatek, a longtime acquaintance, covered expenses.

"No one anticipated this outcome. I stood outside the top 100 and now contest a Grand Slam final. It remains difficult to grasp," she said.

In 2021 Chwalinska paused her career indefinitely after a first-round qualifying loss at Wimbledon.

She battled depression that left her drained and bedridden, unsure of any return.

Four months later she resumed, yet progress to the elite level advanced gradually.

Chwalinska competed in minor events in Italian venues Brescia and Bari following French Open qualifying defeat last year.

She now prepares to enter Court Philippe Chatrier before 15,000 spectators with a global audience watching.

"I have always liked performing before crowds, even on the ITF tour. I favored events with strong interest," Chwalinska noted.

"The platform differs, yet my goal stays the same: victory."
