Mercedes shared an Instagram video of the 19-year-old Italian requesting his towel in the team area after practice for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. He receives one marked To Kimi from Kim.

Thank you Kim, he replies while placing it around his neck. The absent towel turned into a social media joke as Antonelli kept inquiring about it.

TV footage after Sunday's Monaco race suggested Kardashian, with Ferrari driver Hamilton, lifted the folded item from the number one spot, used it on her face and sunglasses then departed with it. Reuters

Also noted, praise for the Guardian style guide on profanity, which permitted full publication of Gasly's strong words last Sunday since the language was essential to convey the facts or character. The strong terms likely echoed through the F1 hierarchy as each person passed along unwelcome updates.

Some express discontent. Martin Brundle worried after Gasly's interview about the issues the FIA created. Red Bull's Laurent Mekies, whose Isack Hadjar dropped from third, told Sky: I think we are a bit confused, not so much because you win the podium or lose the podium, because at the end of the day we are talking about non-appealable penalties, and you are racing around cars that are receiving non-appealable penalties. You adapt your racing also, and some cars actually served their penalties there. I think regardless of what we think as teams, and we defend our competitive positions, it is very important for the fans that we get, moving forward, the right clarity about the race result at the time that the race is finishing.

Returning to the debate. Gasly told Sky's Ted Kravitz today: I am extremely happy for the whole team, very proud of the whole team, the way they have fought for all of us for that result. Sunday night I felt very low. The team did an amazing job. I am proud of everyone, the FIA for the transparency and for recognising their responsibilities. Yet while he regained the points and position, he missed standing on the Monte Carlo podium with Prince Albert: It will not give me back what I missed. We will have to do it another time.

Track action this weekend so far shows Russell fastest in first practice, though Antonelli rested as rookies took turns in team cars. In second practice, Lando Norris edged Russell, with Antonelli fifth but relaxed as it marked his debut outing.

In this morning's third practice, a Mercedes topped the times again, this time George Russell:

George Russell gained confidence for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix by leading the timesheets in the final practice session. The Mercedes driver has faced tough weeks but has topped two of the three practice sessions at Montmelo.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri came next, two tenths behind, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third and the 2025 champion Lando Norris fourth in the other McLaren.

Lewis Hamilton placed fifth but seven tenths off Russell, ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth and the championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli, chasing a sixth straight Grand Prix win on Sunday, grew frustrated with traffic. The 19-year-old Italian's first qualifying simulation lap was disrupted by slow Lance Stroll, and on his second several cars blocked his path. Why do I always get traffic? I do not understand, he said over team radio.

Home supporters cheered Fernando Alonso from the grandstand named after the two-time world champion, ahead of what he calls likely his final race at Montmelo. Reuters

Preamble

Just when George Russell believed his fortune could not worsen further.

Formula One and the FIA want fans to recall the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix for Kimi Antonelli's fifth consecutive victory. That stood as a remarkable feat untouched by surrounding events around Mercedes's young Italian. Lewis Hamilton finished second and no one disputes the Ferrari driver's merit. Everything else, however, drew scrutiny.

The series of pit-lane speeding penalties initially pointed to widespread team errors. Alpine's successful appeal against Pierre Gasly's drop from third to seventh, approved on Friday, revealed Formula One itself had erred, leaving all parties dissatisfied except the legal teams. In short, they measured the wrong distance, and several drivers including Hamilton, though without major harm, were wrongly judged to have exceeded the speed limit by less than 0.1km/h.

Russell will feel the greatest frustration, as his Mercedes team added to F1's mistake by not having him serve his five-second penalty on a later pit stop. This forced a drive-through that cost far more than five seconds, dropping him from the points and now 68 behind his young teammate in the championship, two points behind Hamilton.

No other penalized teams appealed, so authorities state they forfeited that option due to the FIA's time limits on race issues. Yet lawyers remain involved. Those who gained from Gasly's demotion also object to his return, with Isack Hadjar and Red Bull signaling intent to challenge his regained podium spot and McLaren doing the same over Oscar Piastri, who served his five seconds and fell from fourth to fifth. Teams had 96 hours to convert the intent into a formal appeal, so more details should emerge by Tuesday at latest.

Recall this was the week when some form of agreement was expected. Changes to the petrol and battery balance for coming seasons were settled to address critics led by Max Verstappen regarding this year's rules, which limit flat-out running and played a role in Oliver Bearman's severe Miami crash.

That forms the setting for today's qualifying in Barcelona, unfolding in bright sunshine yet under a shadow.
