Boxer Floyd Mayweather now confronts two felony counts involving theft and intent to defraud after allegedly passing a bad check to acquire a luxury watch priced at $200,000 in Las Vegas, according to Nevada court documents.

Mayweather skipped a Clark County court hearing on Monday and was represented by his lawyer instead. His formal charges consist of theft valued at $100,000 or more along with drawing or passing a check with intent to defraud valued at $1,200 or higher.

Clark County prosecutors submitted an initial criminal complaint on April 27, per court records reviewed by ESPN, and issued a court order three days later requiring Mayweather to appear before a judge. His attorney's appearance on Monday satisfied that requirement.

The complaint states Mayweather issued a $200,000 check drawn on a Wells Fargo Bank account to Gold and Beyond, a premium Las Vegas resale shop, on Dec. 31, 2024. It further claims he wrote the check despite having insufficient funds, property, or credit in the account to cover it fully.

ESPN secured a copy of the receipt for the Audemars Piguet watch acquired on Dec. 25, 2024.

The theft charge asserts Mayweather exchanged the check for property or services while knowing it would not clear upon presentation. The complaint describes his actions as knowing, felonious, and without legal authority.

A conviction on the fraud charge could result in one to four years in prison plus fines up to $5,000 and restitution, under Nevada law. The felony theft count carries potential prison terms of one to 20 years and fines reaching $15,000.

Marc Cook, an attorney with Cook and Kelesis representing Gold and Beyond, informed ESPN on Tuesday that his client submitted the complaint to the Clark County District Attorney's office in February.

The delay occurred because the client trusted Mayweather and sought to provide every chance for repayment, Cook explained. Matters reached a point with no responses and no payment received for a watch Mayweather had possessed for well over a year.

Cook noted his client preferred to avoid charges against Mayweather while attempting resolution and pursued all possible avenues only to be ignored.

Mayweather's attorney, Adrian Lobo, stated to ESPN on Tuesday evening that her client held no intent to defraud Gold and Beyond. She highlighted a longstanding business relationship with the store owner both before and after the transaction and noted the owner opted for criminal complaint rather than civil resolution.

This issue does not belong in criminal court, Lobo wrote, adding that Mayweather anticipates vindication through proceedings.

Lobo added via email that Mayweather faces no travel restrictions in the case, with his next court date set for Sept. 17.

The situation marks the latest among Mayweather's various legal challenges.

Separate civil suits in at least four states claim Mayweather owes money to plaintiffs. The Internal Revenue Service maintains a tax lien exceeding $7.2 million for unpaid taxes from 2018 and 2023. An additional lien over $22,500 was filed by a Las Vegas-area gated community.

The IRS declined to comment on the lien, citing restrictions on discussing taxpayer information.

Mayweather serves as plaintiff in separate lawsuits filed earlier this year against Showtime seeking $340 million and against former business associates for $175 million, alleging fraud and aiding breach of fiduciary duty.

Mayweather is set to face kickboxer Mike Zambidis in an exhibition bout on June 27 in Athens, Greece.

A source close to Mayweather indicated on Tuesday that he retains his passport and plans to depart for Greece later this week. Earlier concerns about passport revocation tied to the IRS lien have been addressed through work by his tax attorneys with the agency, allowing travel for the fight and return.
