24th over: England 105-2 (Gay 40, Root 14) Matt Henry returns for a spell ahead of tea. He drifts too straight to Root, who punishes the error by driving firmly to the square leg boundary. Root retains the strike with a quick single into the covers.

23rd over: England 100-2 (Gay 40, Root 9) Root works across his front pad and the slips appeal, but the inside edge saves him for a single. Smith strays onto the pads and Gay clips the ball fine for four to bring up the hundred for England.

22nd over: England 93-2 (Gay 36, Root 8) The floodlights come on as O'Rourke delivers a testing over. Gay collects two with a push into the covers. Conditions remain challenging before tea, though the forecast for the remainder of the match is bright and sunny.

21st over: England 93-2 (Gay 34, Root 8) Gay pulls Smith for two and glances another single. New Zealand concede a no-ball for too many fielders behind square on the leg side. The light has faded at the Oval and rain could arrive soon.

20th over: England 88-2 (Gay 31, Root 7) O'Rourke sends one down the leg side that runs away for four off Root's thigh pad. Root adds a single with a clip off his toes. England rebuild after losing Bethell in a genuine Test atmosphere.

19th over: England 83-2 (Gay 31, Root 6) Gay leaves well outside off before Smith drifts onto the pads. Gay flicks the ball through the leg side for four in the style of a young Alastair Cook.

18th over: England 79-2 (Gay 27, Root 6) O'Rourke bowls back of a length and Gay handles the short ball well, steering a boundary past gully. The skies have turned grey and humid, suiting the bowlers in an engaging session.

17th over: England 74-2 (Gay 22, Root 6) Joe Root receives a warm welcome and guides his first ball for four behind point. He adds two more past point to close the over after Bethell's dismissal.

Thanks Taha. The atmosphere has turned muggy at the Oval. Smith produces a fine delivery that moves away from Bethell, who edges to Blundell for a sharp diving catch.

16th over: England 68-1 (Bethell 9, Gay 22) O'Rourke continues against Gay. After several dot balls he offers width and Gay drives to the boundary. Drinks are taken during this intriguing contest.

15th over: England 64-1 (Bethell 9, Gay 18) Nathan Smith, fresh from the run-out of Duckett, bowls tightly from around the wicket to Bethell. New Zealand maintain strong discipline in recent overs.

14th over: England 64-1 (Bethell 9, Gay 18) O'Rourke bowls at pace to Gay, who edges low toward gully where Phillips fields. Another maiden follows from the quick bowler.

13th over: England 63-1 (Bethell 9, Gay 18) Bethell relieves pressure with a cover drive for four off Henry.

12th over: England 58-1 (Bethell 4, Gay 17) Will O'Rourke enters the attack from around the wicket. He swings the ball away at good pace and Gay plays and misses.

11th over: England 58-1 (Bethell 4, Gay 17) Henry beats Bethell's outside edge with a sharp delivery.

10th over: England 58-1 (Bethell 4, Gay 17) Gay drives Jamieson through the covers for four. Jamieson responds with an excellent ball that squares up the batter. Bethell has yet to build on modest Test scores.

9th over: England 52-1 (Bethell 4, Gay 11) Gay works Henry for three. Bethell gets off the mark with a boundary behind point. Henry replies with a fine wobble-seam ball.

8th over: England 45-1 (Bethell 0, Gay 8) Gay and Duckett continue to build their partnership after an earlier missed run-out chance.

WICKET! Duckett run out Smith 36 (England 45-1)

Gay pushes into the covers and Nathan Smith gathers cleanly before throwing down the stumps. Duckett is well short and departs after a fluent innings.

7th over: England 45-0 (Duckett 36, Gay 8) Henry bowls short and Duckett pulls powerfully for four. He reaches 36 from just 25 balls.

6th over: England 37-0 (Duckett 28, Gay 8) Duckett drives Jamieson through extra cover and adds three more straight. Jamieson oversteps, extending the over.

Stokes named in Durham squad

Ben Stokes has been included in Durham's squad for their County Championship match against Northamptonshire starting Friday.

5th over: England 25-0 (Duckett 17, Gay 8) Henry nearly finds the edge as Gay plays tentatively outside off stump in a maiden over.

4th over: England 25-0 (Duckett 17, Gay 8) Jamieson resumes and Duckett collects two before edging past the slips for four.

Phillips is an admirable cricketer who consistently maximises his ability and delivers repeated strong performances.

He has also claimed 33 Test wickets at an average of 31 with his off-spin.

New Zealand enjoy a productive morning as England struggle in the field. Glenn Phillips avoided facing Jofra Archer until reaching 97.

Lunch

3rd over: England 15-0 (Duckett 7, Gay 8) Gay survives a close run-out attempt from Smith. He then drives Henry for four. Lunch is taken with England 15 without loss.

2nd over: England 10-0 (Duckett 6, Gay 4) Jamieson is driven through the covers for four by Gay on the first ball of the over.

1st over: England 6-0 (Duckett 6, Gay 0) Matt Henry opens to Duckett, who drives the first pitched-up ball for four through mid-off.
