Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento has been withdrawn from England's World Cup squad after picking up a calf injury and Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah has been drafted in as cover.

The 23-year-old suffered the problem in a session on Sunday ahead of the opening fixture with Croatia on Wednesday evening at 21:00 BST.

His place in the squad was already uncertain following a thigh problem that kept him out for the closing five weeks of the club season.

Chalobah, who has earned a single cap, will link up with the group only after the Croatia game.

He is travelling to the England base in Kansas City while the remainder of the party move on to Dallas.

Regulations allow outfield players to be swapped in a World Cup squad for serious injury or illness up to 24 hours before the opening match.

Livramento earned his first England cap under Gareth Southgate in November 2024 and has appeared five times under Thomas Tuchel, twice in the starting line-up.

He entered at half-time in the 1-0 warm-up victory against New Zealand yet remained unused against Costa Rica.

Reece James remains Tuchel's preferred right-back yet his availability is also uncertain after a campaign disrupted by injury.

The 26-year-old missed Chelsea's final nine matches of the season with a hamstring complaint.

Further options already in the squad are Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa.

Spence, capable on either flank, has made six appearances under Tuchel while Konsa, mainly a central defender, has played 11 times with nine starts.

Chalobah last represented England in June 2025 when he completed 90 minutes in a friendly versus Senegal and was named on the bench for several World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel.

Like Konsa, the 26-year-old is most comfortable at centre-back.
