Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez is reflecting on whether it is time to step away from international football after his team's narrow 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final.

The 33-year-old has earned 67 caps for his nation and featured in every minute of their eight matches at the tournament, recording two clean sheets while conceding eight goals overall.

He lifted the World Cup trophy in 2022 and earned the golden glove as the competition's top goalkeeper that year.

"I had dreamed of winning again and bringing the trophy back to Argentina to create more history," Martinez posted on Instagram.

"The pain is difficult to put into words. There is much to consider about the path ahead and whether it is time to step aside.

"I am truly sorry and gave everything I could for my country and teammates."

Martinez claimed the Yashin Trophy as the world's best goalkeeper at the Ballon d'Or in both 2023 and 2024.

He has been with Aston Villa since 2020 under a deal that runs until 2029, though reports have linked him with a potential summer move to Juventus in Italy.
