Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone has expressed lasting appreciation for former manager Marc Skinner, who provided key support after the death of her father.

Skinner departed United by mutual agreement on Monday after five seasons leading the Women's Super League side.

Under his guidance the team reached the Champions League knockout phase for the first time and claimed their maiden major honour in the 2024 Women's FA Cup, yet he faced criticism from some supporters and left after a fourth-place WSL finish that ended European hopes for the next campaign.

England international Toone nevertheless stressed her gratitude for Skinner's off-field help, especially during the period after her father died in September 2024.

"Marc and I collaborated for five years, and I developed considerably as both a player and an individual," she told BBC Sport when reflecting on his assistance at that time.

"I faced the most difficult experience imaginable, and he remained present throughout. He offered a shoulder to lean on while allowing me space on the field to perform freely. I will always value how he guided me through that period.

"We shared candid discussions. He proved to be a decent person who enabled me to return and contribute fully to the squad.

"Beyond that, he took time to understand players as people outside of matches. I will remain thankful for our shared years."

Toone and teammate Maya Le Tissier spoke at United's pre-season media event on Tuesday, shortly after Skinner's exit.

They noted that Skinner addressed the squad in the dressing room on Monday morning to say farewell before the announcement.

"We encountered numerous difficulties yet also enjoyed positive moments," United captain Le Tissier remarked.

"It was a sad occasion, but we look ahead. He recruited me as a youngster and awarded me the captaincy, two of the biggest privileges in my career. I owe him a great deal."

United expect to name a replacement promptly, with the 2026-27 WSL campaign set to begin in a month.

Reports suggest interest in a coach experienced in nurturing young talent as the club shifts focus toward academy development and spends less on transfers than several rivals.

Toone and Le Tissier confirmed they played no role in selecting the next manager.

"We have had no input," Le Tissier said. "We understand an appointment will come soon, which helps us prepare for our opening pre-season fixture."

Toone added: "We have both worked under various coaches with distinct approaches, so we will commit fully and adapt to the new ideas.

"The club aims to promote youth while supporting senior members of the group.

"It is surprising to hear that description of ourselves at 26, yet we are leaders and must rise to the task. The incoming manager will bring fresh excitement and a new path."

United face a period of transition after five first-team departures this summer, including striker Melvine Malard to Chelsea, while Gabby George prepares to join Brighton.

Questions persist around investment in the women's side, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe facing scrutiny over his stance on women's football after missing both FA Cup final appearances at Wembley.

Nevertheless Toone and Le Tissier stressed squad unity and urged fans to rally behind the team.

"I joined at the outset, and a family atmosphere has always defined the group," Toone said. "We support one another in challenging times, and there have been several across the years. Conditions may feel uncertain now, but once the new manager arrives we will focus and enjoy playing together."

"Back the team regardless of circumstances, because true supporters stay with us throughout," Le Tissier concluded. "We give our all, and Marc did the same."
