Fortes joins 1,600 fellow singing Cape Verdeans at Club Annabel, sporting a blue jersey with an image of Amílcar Cabral, the independence leader for Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau from Portugal.

“Missing out as a pro player stings,” he admits. “Yet as a Cape Verdean I feel immense pride. We cannot overlook this achievement. It marks our finest hour. The world once ignored us. Now attention turns our way.”

“I picture myself as a player still,” Jerr says. “Nightmares linger from Utrecht coaches urging weight loss. Art found me instead. Yet nothing matches this moment of seeing our team here.”

The occasion carries extra weight. “Our parents arrived in the 1960s seeking better prospects while their homeland trails,” Jerr explains. “Work there still lacks basic email invoicing. Many families lack solid doors or roofs.”

“This could attract tourists, backers and growth. Rotterdam lads, not imports, delivered it. They repaid what parents gave after leaving.”
