Women encounter barriers to sports professions stemming from deep-rooted sexism, bias and workplace intimidation, according to evidence presented to members of parliament.

Coaching experts informed a parliamentary select committee on Thursday that women in these roles are often ignored, diminished and excluded from advancement despite holding appropriate qualifications.

"Such unwelcoming settings prove extremely difficult for women seeking to establish careers in athletics. The situation has deteriorated to the point where placing women in these conditions seems unjust," stated Lisa West, policy director at Women in Sport.

Impacts reach well beyond personal advancement, specialists explained during the women and equalities committee's initial hearing for its inquiry titled Beyond Participation: Routes into Sport for Girls and Women.

"A system that sidelines female coaches may deprive athletes of inspirational figures, reduce available talent and send signals that top influential posts stay reserved for men, even amid evolving sports dynamics," noted Lisa Williams, head coach of the London All Stars women's basketball squad.

The committee learned that one in five women coaches have faced harassment or intimidation, underscoring persistent prejudices influencing trust, advancement and authority throughout the sector.

Panelists described everyday bias directed at female coaches from parents and male peers alike. "Conditions show no improvement," Williams added. "Although women hold low trust in reporting processes due to absent policies and consequences, reports of negative encounters from women have risen."

Even highly credentialed women get passed over for roles given to less experienced men, the session revealed. Hannah Dingley, girls' academy head at Manchester City Football Club, shared her own channeling into entry-level positions.

"I have received offers solely for under-9s instruction despite superior qualifications compared to many men selected for senior groups," she explained. "The presumption was that my nurturing, understanding and gentle approach made me unsuitable for elite competition."

Although women's sports have expanded, females occupy roughly one quarter of coaching spots in UK Sport-supported programs, with fewer still in technical leadership positions.

Emily Handyside, coaching director at UK Coaching, and Amy Fazackerley, national partnership lead at Coach Core foundation, outlined the extent of challenges.

"Female participation in coaching dropped 10 percent from 2022 to 2024 in community sports and 6 percent at elite levels," Handyside reported. "Declines appear sharpest among women aged 18 to 34."

A nationwide study by UK Coaching and Women in Sport identified harassment, intimidation and bias as primary factors driving women from coaching, with many citing lack of safety or backing in male-heavy settings.

India Perris-Redding, women's talent identification manager at Sale Sharks Women, referenced internal findings from Premiership Women's Rugby and the Rugby Football Union showing 76 percent of female coaches perceive a gender performance disparity in top rugby. She noted: "No team or England national side has a woman as head coach."

Emma Hayes, Chelsea Women manager from 2012 to 2024, has voiced strong views on the environment in football. "Male advantage has long dominated the game here," she stated in 2023, noting women routinely navigate systemic prejudice and intimidation.

Sarina Wiegman, England women's national team manager, has addressed structural imbalances: "In other fields women reach senior roles, making the football situation unusual. Change needs to happen fast. Extra efforts are required to bring more women into the sport."

Tracey Neville, former England head coach, has emphasized that women continue seeking acknowledgment and regard for their contributions.
