The U.S. men's national team enjoyed an ideal beginning to its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey. The 4-1 result over Paraguay on Friday positioned the side atop a tough Group D while carrying a plus-3 goal difference.

Those numbers only hint at how flawless the opening 90 minutes proved for Mauricio Pochettino's squad. The four goals marked the highest total the Americans have posted in any World Cup fixture. They also controlled the match far more than the visitors, posting 65 percent possession against 35 percent along with 598 pass attempts to 319, 12 chances created to 7 and 16 shots to 9.

Inside the press area, along the concourse and at viewing parties nationwide, observers wondered aloud whether this marked the finest showing in program history.

To explore that idea, ESPN consulted USMNT analysts Jeff Carlisle, Sam Borden and Cesar Hernandez.

By how much did the USMNT surpass expectations versus Paraguay?

Hernandez: The Americans did not dramatically exceed forecasts, yet the margin proved meaningful. A key factor was the refusal to ease off after the early advantage. In earlier periods the USMNT might have adopted a cautious approach with a 1-0 lead, but that approach was absent on Friday.

Observers had questioned Pochettino's limited use of a consistent starting XI before the tournament, yet those concerns faded once the immediate cohesion and proactive play, particularly in the first half, became clear. It remains early for sweeping conclusions, but Pochettino deserves substantial credit.

Carlisle: The Americans clearly surpassed expectations, shown by a winning margin that matched the largest in program history dating to 1930. Beyond the score line, the manner of the win stood out. The USMNT asserted itself from the first whistle and maintained control aside from brief second-half stretches.

As Sam observed, this came against a disciplined opponent that allowed only 10 goals across 18 matches. The level of dominance was striking and unexpected by most.

Still, the finishing proved exceptional on the night, given an expected goals figure of 1.42 that yielded four actual goals. Such output is unlikely to repeat. What can carry forward is the pressing intensity and continued forward pressure, which augurs well for a lengthy tournament run.

Was this the greatest performance in USMNT history?

Borden: For me the short answer is yes. Recency bias exists, and this remains a group-stage result rather than a knockout decider. Those points carry weight, especially when measured against a World Cup elimination match such as the 2002 win over Mexico.

Considering the two displays, the 2002 contest carried higher stakes, yet the elegance and completeness of Friday's result felt more commanding.

The Mexico victory relied on American grit and organization, absorbing pressure before striking with precision. Javier Aguirre, now back in charge of Mexico, had expressed confidence that his side would prevail. Bruce Arena's team flipped that momentum.

On Friday the U.S. had to seize the initiative itself. For years the program lacked the personnel to dictate terms in that fashion. This time, even versus a stout defensive unit, it succeeded fully. It represented the best the USMNT has produced and a vision of what supporters hope lies ahead.

Hernandez: The 2009 victory over Spain in the Confederations Cup still tops my personal ranking. Spain entered that semifinal with a 35-match unbeaten run and held the No. 1 FIFA ranking. The lineup featured stars including Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres.

Friday's result belongs in the program's history books. Scoring four times against a robust CONMEBOL opponent is a notable feat worth celebrating. Even so, defeating Spain in the knockout stage of a sanctioned event sits a notch above a group-stage win. Should the U.S. maintain the standard shown in the opener, a result surpassing the 2009 achievement may arrive soon.

Carlisle: Much depends on how one defines best ever. In terms of landmark victories, several stand larger. The 2002 World Cup round-of-16 win over Mexico remains iconic given the stakes and the opponent. I share Cesar's view that the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinal victory over Spain, ending its long unbeaten sequence, carries greater weight. One could also argue the team performed at a high level in the final of that event despite the 3-2 loss to Brazil.

That said, if the measure is the most stylish result in USMNT history, the Paraguay match will be difficult to surpass. The side generated 12 chances and completed more than 500 passes. The possession was purposeful, with constant pressure on the Paraguay goal through sharp movement and clever interplay. The U.S. will hope similar displays follow.
