The 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are ready to begin with Team Wales seeking positive outcomes.

Thursday's opening ceremony at the Hydro Arena will mark the official launch of the event.

Competition starts on Friday, 24 July after a 'day zero' was added before the ceremony to handle high demand in bowls and para bowls.

Weeks, months and years of training will come together as athletes represent their nation against 73 other countries and territories.

This is a reduced event after Glasgow took over when the Victoria bid from Australia withdrew.

Welsh athletes will take part in 3x3 wheelchair basketball, artistic gymnastics, athletics and para athletics, bowls and para bowls, boxing, judo, netball, swimming and para swimming, track cycling and para track cycling plus weightlifting.

But where might Wales collect medals? Who could be the rising stars this summer? And when did Wales achieve its best results?

BBC Sport Wales has selected some athletes to watch and examines what success may involve.

Wales will look to several established performers who already hold major global medals.

Cyclist Emma Finucane earned two bronze medals in Birmingham four years ago and has since collected 16 medals at the Olympics, World and European Championships.

The Paris 2024 gold medallist will race in the keirin, sprint and team sprint when track cycling starts on Thursday, 30 July.

Swimmer Matt Richards aims to secure the one major medal missing from his career so far.

Four fourth-place finishes in 2022 provide motivation to complete the collection in Glasgow.

At just 19, gymnast Ruby Evans has already competed at an Olympics and holds a silver medal from the World Championships plus a British all-around title.

Evans may guide Wales to a team medal along with individual results in the all-around and floor exercise.

Wales' team captain Olivia Breen is among several para athletes who could medal in Glasgow.

She claimed gold in the T38 long jump in 2018 and the T38 100m in 2022.

Boxer Rosie Eccles will also defend her crown in the women's light-middleweight division in what she describes as her final Games after being named flag bearer for Thursday's opening ceremony.

A name likely to feature often when following Wales this year is Theodora Taylor.

The 17-year-old swimmer from Torfaen Dolphins may enter several events in Glasgow, including relays.

Already racing seniors, she took silver at the GB Swimming Championships in April in the 50m freestyle, earning selection for Great Britain at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris next month.

Lola Hodson, 20, ranks among Wales' top judo prospects. She secured both junior and senior titles at the British Championships in Nottingham in December and finished fifth at the Junior European Championships last year.

Former world number one and Commonwealth gold medallist Natalie Powell now leads performance at Welsh Judo and calls Hodson "the most talented junior we have seen emerge from the Welsh system."

"She shows more talent than I did, and her judo exceeds what I achieved at junior level," said Powell.

"She offers great promise as a junior in a senior event.

"We avoid adding excess pressure, yet she remains a strong talent with significant potential."

Teenage track cyclist Ioan Hepburn is viewed as a future standout.

After losing a kidney in a bike crash during a downhill race at age 13, he hesitated to switch from mountain biking to the track.

The 18-year-old was identified at an agricultural show in Usk by Beicio Cymru sprint coach Rachel Draper after posting the day's top score on a Watt bike, a stationary machine that gauges raw power.

Hepburn was persuaded to visit the Velodrome in Newport and later won a Junior World Championship title at age 17.

With the Games scaled back this time, direct comparisons to past editions would not be fair.

Therefore no medal target has been set.

"We avoid discussing medals but I would be misleading you if I claimed it would not be remarkable," said Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones.

"I have flags in my bags ready if that occurs, so I can bring them out quickly.

"What I can confirm is that every athlete is here to represent Wales with pride and passion. I know they will give their all."

Jones stresses providing Team Wales the chance to deliver peak efforts.

"Many discuss success," said Jones.

"Within each team they hold their own talks.

"For Team Wales it means offering them the setting to excel, where success means producing their finest performance on the day that counts, under pressure with global attention

"If they achieve that, little more can be requested.

"A personal best counts as success for me, focused on creating conditions that allow it.

"We will support them regardless, aware of the sacrifices, effort and commitment involved. So I know they are eager to compete."

Wales selected a prominent chef de mission in the television presenter, yet the role involves practical support as Jones helps establish a sense of home in a Scottish hotel.

"Following all the planning over the past 18 months and beyond, it is excellent for the team to arrive," said Jones.

"We have started strongly. It seems as though we have been here for a month preparing everything.

"Much remains to ensure logistics, arrangements and rooms are set for the athletes' arrival."
