Brock Whiston arrived at the Commonwealth Games already holding titles as Paralympic champion, world champion and world record holder.

Two goals still eluded her.

She needed a Commonwealth gold medal, and 17 years had passed since her father Gel last watched from the pool deck.

"He does not enjoy swimming," England's 29-year-old Whiston told the BBC.

"The warmth is uncomfortable and he dislikes the chlorine smell."

Gel's last visit occurred when Whiston's mother faced cancer, an illness from which she has recovered.

Since then he has provided strong support from home, working tirelessly to help her reach this level, though he recently received a Parkinson's diagnosis.

This event encouraged him to travel.

"I wanted only to make him proud," Whiston told TNT Sports.

"Winning the race for him mattered more than any time."

Whiston won the women's 100m breaststroke SB8 in a new Games record.

Earlier this month the primary school employee discussed staying composed after missing gold in the same event at the Paris Paralympics because of crowd intensity.

"I saw him only while completing my lap with the medal," Whiston said.

"He kissed my head and said 'love you'. He appeared stunned."

Whiston's Glasgow program has ended, yet future meets await.

"He said this was enough and he will not return," she said.

"Home support remains his preference.

"His single appearance created a special memory."
