Young talents like Thomas Rew, aged 18, might become England's third-youngest player. Eddie Jack, 21, has seven T20 appearances and could earn his eighth for the national team.

Both head to Australia next month for the shortest format, yet they missed selection for the 50-over matches, clarifying the priority. With the World Cup under a year away, ODIs demand full focus from England as serious contenders.

Following tough times in the format, including a poor World Cup defense in 2023 and a winless Champions Trophy in 2025, results have improved. Harry Brook and Brendon McCullum have delivered three straight series victories this year, and while Sri Lanka pose little threat next year, India will.

Each series reached a decider, and England repeated their Morgan-era style by posting 350-plus totals that applied decisive pressure. Even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma fell short at Lord's despite strong starts.

A tri-series in Pakistan, beginning Tuesday in Rawalpindi, will feature a different pace, with Sri Lanka again involved. Pakistan return from a weak showing against the Dukes ball in England but should offer stronger resistance in limited-overs games at home.

When a depleted Australia visited in June, they faced turning pitches in Rawalpindi and Lahore, with 231 the top score across three games as Shaheen Afridi's team won 2-1 for three home series victories in a row. This contest promises greater intensity than those Tests.

Brook's approach in a nation where he scored four Test centuries, including a triple, and won the PSL with Lahore Qalandars draws interest. Yet Will Jacks stands out most in England's white-ball side, having shifted from opener to finisher while taking the most ODI wickets this year with his off-breaks.

Jacks debuted internationally four years ago in Pakistan and stayed on the fringes until Brook, a former Under-19 roommate, took the white-ball captaincy and placed him in the middle order. The batter always possessed power, shown by six sixes in an over at age 20, but now adds composure when required, evident in several unbeaten knocks at the T20 World Cup.

During England's middle-over struggles against Sri Lanka on a tricky Chester-le-Street pitch last month, Jacks stayed patient for an unbeaten 46 then claimed a five-wicket haul.

He will spin alongside Adil Rashid in Pakistan, with Mason Crane possibly turning a few as well. Nearly nine years after his sole Test cap, the former Hampshire leg-spinner has returned via strong form at Glamorgan and an England development contract. With Rehan Ahmed left out, Crane may audition as Rashid's successor.

James Coles and Henry Crocombe are the uncapped selections, and Crocombe received notable backing with a two-year central contract before any international bowling.

Jofra Archer rests, leaving the attack slightly short on variety, while Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler miss out through injury. Their absence mattered little in the Oval decider against Sri Lanka, where Tom Banton scored his first international century and Jordan Cox added a quick 76.

Banton, 27, like Jacks shares age-group ties with Brook and had early England chances before settling recently. Cox endured an initial setback against West Indies but now looks set for regular all-format duty.

Growing pains have affected them and Brook in ODIs, given limited Yorkshire exposure, yet they have progressed, positioning England well with at least 20 ODIs left to refine before facing Bangladesh in Namibia at next year's World Cup. Youth features in T20s, but the 50-over game remains a mature affair for now.
