Aston Villa have wrapped up the signing of Brazil midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal worth £38m.

The agreement includes an initial £34m fee plus £4m in potential add-ons.

On Friday the club secured a record transfer exceeding £50m for Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, outpacing Newcastle for the Swiss player.

Atletico Madrid expressed interest in Gomes too, yet the 25-year-old departed Wolves' Portugal training base on Thursday for a medical ahead of finalizing terms at Villa Park.

Villa's Amadou Onana will miss the rest of the year after a serious knee issue while on international duty with Belgium at the World Cup.

The club offloaded Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m, and Morgan Rogers is poised to depart following a £117m agreement with Chelsea.

Gomes featured in 41 matches for Wolves last term and earned Player of the Year honors despite the side finishing bottom of the Premier League.

Across 130 outings since arriving from Flamengo in 2023, he contributed seven goals.

Villa acted swiftly after Onana tore his anterior cruciate ligament on World Cup duty with Belgium, disrupting their summer recruitment strategy.

Tielemans' exit left a clear midfield vacancy, although Boubacar Kamara is expected back from his own lengthy knee absence sustained in January.

Gomes brings Premier League experience that should allow him to adapt swiftly to Unai Emery's system.

Emery prefers players ready to grasp his tactics immediately, and Gomes appears well suited.

A tenacious presence, he recorded the third-highest tackle count in the league last season with 107, trailing only Everton's James Garner and Joao Palhinha, the Bayern loanee at Tottenham whom Villa also monitored.

His 194 ball recoveries ranked fourth in the division.

After 116 Premier League appearances during his time at Molineux, he offers valuable know-how as Villa enter a fresh chapter post their Europa League triumph.

The fee represents sensible value while Villa balance their books to meet Premier League and Uefa financial rules.
