England and Australia ought to explore staging a Test match in India to boost interest in the longer format, according to the head of Cricket Australia.

The sides have traditionally faced each other in Test cricket only during Ashes series, alternating home and away venues roughly every four years.

Plans are underway for a special one-off Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027 to mark 150 years since the first encounter between the teams.

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg told BBC Sport that the idea of moving the historic and commercially attractive Test rivalry to India deserves discussion.

Any such match would require agreement from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

"It is not currently in our plans, yet all possibilities remain open for review. We must stay willing to examine every option," Greenberg said.

"Our ties with the ECB and the BCCI remain solid, and clear chances exist in India to add more fixtures in key markets."

Cricket Australia is already expanding into India by shifting the Big Bash League abroad for the first time, as Melbourne Renegades prepare to meet Perth Scorchers in Chennai during December.

The organisation aims to increase the tournament's worldwide reach by accessing cricket's largest audience.

Test match interest in India has fallen in recent times due to heavy T20 schedules and the Indian Premier League's dominance.

Greenberg expressed confidence that an England versus Australia Test on Indian soil would generate strong excitement.

"Test cricket involving Australia, India and England stays robust and often defies wider trends. Our goal is to expand and reinforce it," he said.

Greenberg supported the choice to play the 150th anniversary Test under lights at the MCG.

The 1977 centenary Test also took place in Melbourne, yet this upcoming fixture marks the first men's Test there using a pink ball.

While some former Australia players reportedly expressed concerns to Cricket Australia, Greenberg noted his role is not to seek popularity.

"We aimed to attract the largest possible crowd. A daytime match during work and school hours would have hindered attendance," he said.

"Broadcast rights in the UK and time zone factors add a commercial need. Pink-ball Tests deliver major audience benefits for us.

"It may upset some traditionalists, but our focus lies on drawing more viewers to the game."

Greenberg emphasised efforts to balance honouring Test cricket's history with adapting the format for modern audiences.

He suggested the pitch for the anniversary match would provide better play than the surface used in last year's Ashes Test at the MCG, which ended inside two days.

"We seek to celebrate 150 years of Test cricket between our nations while looking ahead to evolve the sport," Greenberg added.

"We aim for that balance, and the MCG pitch should prove a little flatter than last time.

"Our pink-ball Test record is strong, yet this match is intended to feature less grass and a flatter surface."
