Liverpool saw Iraola's hiring as a chance to establish a more forward-thinking approach on the pitch.

During his first media session the previous week, he expressed a desire to provide supporters with a side they could admire.

The ex-Spain player, who played 12 years at Athletic Club, identifies several parallels between his roots and his current surroundings.

Athletic's policy restricts selection to those born or trained in the Basque region.

"It is a very special club," Iraola remarked. "You must get the most out of every squad member. Selling and replacing is not an option very often."
