The Geelong Cats have come under investigation as the team linked to a reported agreement with a player who had a record of multiple head injuries. The arrangement reportedly let the athlete keep competing while shielding the club from later legal claims over those injuries.

The Herald Sun first revealed the pact on Thursday morning without naming the club. By afternoon several outlets had identified the Cats. The club has been asked for a response.

AFL Players Association chief executive James Gallagher stated the reported agreement may breach both league rules and Australian law. He noted the game must ensure a safe workplace for players and that clubs share this duty as employers.

Clubs cannot independently waive duties under the collective bargaining agreement or standard player contracts, nor sidestep health and safety laws. No player may return to action or training without medical clearance. The association is working with the AFL to review the matter and prevent similar cases at the top level.

The Herald Sun described the confidential arrangement from two years ago in which a player with repeated concussions would accept legal responsibility for any future brain injury sustained on the field. The club board reportedly approved the deal.

Former West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson told SEN the report left him stunned. He questioned how such an idea could be viewed as acceptable and how it could advance through club channels.

Geelong chair at the time was Craig Drummond, who has since become chair of the AFL Commission.

The AFL and Geelong have been asked for comment.

Brain health, concussion and CTE pose a major challenge for the AFL, which has introduced measures in recent seasons to reduce head injuries and improve safety.

A class action led by former Geelong player Max Rooke has been before Victorian courts for more than two years and now involves former Cats doctors who could face liability for actions dating back to 1985. The case, involving more than 100 ex-AFL players, is due for trial next year.

This year independent doctors at matches gained increased authority to remove concussed players. Club doctors previously held that role.

The change followed one recommendation from the coronial inquest into Shane Tuck death in 2023. Another recommendation to restrict contact training sessions will apply for the first time in the upcoming pre-season.
