Following a hectic series of final transactions, the 2026 MLB trade deadline has wrapped up.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox secured powerful hitters right before the cutoff. The Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets secured major prospect hauls for their sought-after veterans, while the Dodgers added ace Tarik Skubal to their staff.

Which teams made smart decisions? How will the rest of the MLB season unfold? With the trade period now settled, we invited our specialists to discuss what holds true and what does not moving ahead.

Real or not? The Dodgers secured the 2026 World Series on Aug. 1

Alden Gonzalez: Real. At least as certain as October baseball allows given its unpredictability. The Dodgers already built one of the most talented and deep rosters in history, then added the current American League Cy Young winner to the mix.

If things proceed normally, any October opponent will need to navigate Tarik Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Shohei Ohtani, with Tyler Glasnow possibly available in a bullpen led by Edwin Diaz and Tanner Scott. Succeeding there means facing one of the strongest lineups assembled, including Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Andy Pages, Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts and more. With starters healthy, which remains uncertain, the roster looks nearly impossible to overcome.

Jorge Castillo: Not real. Many overlook how the Blue Jays came within two outs of defeating the Dodgers in Game 7 of last year's World Series. The Dodgers stand as strong favorites to become the first National League club with three straight titles, yet success is far from assured. The Brewers, Cubs, Braves and Phillies can all reach the World Series from the National League. The Dodgers' pitching depth exceeds recent teams, but it is not without flaws.

Real or not? The Red Sox rose to the AL lead via Adley Rutschman

Castillo: Not real. The Red Sox currently rank among baseball's hottest clubs and sit with the Yankees and Rays as top AL contenders. Still, I expect the Yankees to lead the AL by October, assuming Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger return from the injured list and perform at their standards. With the AL's top pitching staff, the Yankees would then favor for the pennant for a second time in three years.

Without that, the Red Sox might finish their strong recovery, though it will prove tough absent Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet for the stretch.

Kiley McDaniel: Not real, though progress continues. The Yankees hold a narrow lead in a tight contest involving the Rays and Red Sox. The Red Sox required extra infield support, and returning injured players would aid greatly. Small margins mean fortunate outcomes or hot streaks could decide the AL East, which also determines the top AL team; the recent streak might signal used luck or more ahead.

Real or not? The Phillies and Cubs established themselves as genuine World Series threats

Jesse Rogers: Real. Healthy pitching creates opportunity, and the Phillies' rotation top provides that for October. Roster adjustments occurred, yet this veteran group handles challenges well. Luis Arraez differs from typical Phillies hitters by not relying on power, adding a needed offensive dimension. The Cubs lack the same rotation peak but gained depth via Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes. Outpitching the Dodgers in October requires effort, yet the Cubs excel in defense and their bullpen should improve with deadline help. They hold a chance.

Bradford Doolittle: Not real. Both clubs stayed competitive and improved from before the deadline. The Phillies' outfield shift with Bryce Harper intrigues but risks overthinking, as he has not played the grass often recently. Arraez posted solid second-base numbers this year, so the move puzzles somewhat, though his addition atop the lineup excites and the bullpen strengthened.

The Cubs acquired needed pitchers. While some criticize the Holmes deal on value grounds, it fits as a solid addition. Continued strong play makes the value exchange acceptable beyond this year. The overall impact stays modest, focusing more on avoiding decline than sparking a surge.

Real or not? The Mets and Orioles received fair returns in their deadline sales

Gonzalez: Real, particularly regarding the Orioles' return for Adley Rutschman. Trading him inside the division was expected to demand extra, and it did. Kyson Witherspoon and especially Anthony Eyanson bring talented prospects likely to reach the rotation next year. Enddy Azocar, a 19-year-old outfielder slashing .286/.341/.540 in A ball, adds power and speed.

The Mets sought strong compensation for Clay Holmes from inquiring clubs and landed their new top prospect, shortstop Jefferson Rojas from the Cubs. Seven veterans departed, but Rojas offers the highest upside. This marked a key deadline for Mets president David Stearns, though options beyond Holmes and Luke Weaver were limited.

McDaniel: Real. The Orioles' haul for Rutschman leads, yet added players align with 2027 needs. Eyanson and RHP Michael Forret should contribute to the rotation then, while RHP Alex Hoppe and RF Christian Franklin provide depth, and the system gained upside via Azocar, RF Jhomnardo Reyes, Witherspoon and RHP Harrison Kreiling. Enough talent remains to shift their farm standing and 2027 outlook.

The Mets gained a top-100 prospect in Rojas, potentially impactful by late 2027, plus varied system depth. RHP Gary Gill Hill and SS Sammy Stafura stand out for upside. Without dealing many standout controllable players, returns lacked the scale of Baltimore's.

Real or not? The Guardians overtook the White Sox atop the AL Central

What to make of the Guardians' deadline additions

Doolittle: Not real. Is that a common view? Cleveland performed adequately at the deadline. The White Sox had positioned as division favorites before recent activity and then executed a stronger deadline than the Guardians.

Both can win, yet Chicago extended its edge. Questions arise on future value surrendered for this run, but short-term gains succeeded and surpassed the Guardians' efforts.

Rogers: Not real. They can contend, but it now appears even. The White Sox hold a three-game lead. The Guardians' offense should improve with Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe, as they score a full run less per game than the White Sox. Closing that gap offers a division shot. Cleveland brings experience, yet little else suggests they lead. The finish promises a strong race.
