Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator from South Carolina known as a steadfast ally of Israel, died Sunday morning, July 11, after suffering cardiac arrest.

Throughout his Senate career Graham showed consistent backing for the Jewish state and Jewish communities around the world.

He pushed hard to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and repeatedly backed measures that increased US security assistance to Israel.

Graham made several trips to the region during conflicts, visiting Israel and traveling to Beirut to urge Lebanese leaders directly to disarm Hezbollah.

He co-sponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act of 2017, both designed to counter efforts to boycott Israel.

Graham spoke out against UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which questioned the legal standing of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and helped introduce legislation opposing the measure.

In February he discussed the war that began after the October 7 massacre, the Iranian regime, and Israel's ongoing conflicts over the past three years.

"Without the October 7 massacre happening, I don't believe Iran would be on the verge of regime collapse," he said.

"The determination of the Israeli people to make sure 'Never Again' has meaning has weakened Iran and their proxies, unlike any time since the founding of the religious-Nazi state in 1979," Graham said, tying Iran's current weakness to Israel's military actions.

"The sacrifice of the people who have died in droves for their freedom in Iran and the determination of Israel to strike back after the massacre... those two things have led to this historic moment," he added.
