US Engaged in Talks for Expanded Military Footprint in Greenland

The United States and Denmark have held negotiations in recent months to enhance military operations in Greenland, as reported by the BBC citing several officials involved in the talks.

Washington aims to establish three new bases in southern Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, according to the report.

The White House has acknowledged high-level discussions with representatives from Greenland and Denmark. Officials expressed strong optimism about the talks' progress but provided no specifics.

Denmark's foreign ministry confirmed the ongoing dialogue.

"There is an active diplomatic channel with the United States. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not elaborate further at this stage," a spokesperson stated, per the BBC.

Proposal for US Sovereign Territory

One individual familiar with the matter indicated that the US has proposed formally designating the three new military bases as sovereign US territory.

These installations would mainly conduct surveillance on potential Russian and Chinese movements in the northern Atlantic region known as the GIUK Gap, spanning Greenland, Iceland, and the UK, sources told the BBC.

President Donald Trump has voiced interest in the past about purchasing Greenland outright for national security, particularly to counter threats from China and Russia.

Greenland lies along the shortest path from Europe to North America, vital for the US ballistic-missile early-warning network. The island's capital, Nuuk, sits closer to New York than to Copenhagen.

Positioned at a key geopolitical junction amid growing Arctic militarization by NATO, Russia, and China, Greenland offers strategic value. The US seeks to bolster its presence with radars to track Russian ships and submarines navigating nearby waters. The territory also boasts untapped minerals, oil, and gas reserves, though extraction remains limited.

However, any outright purchase idea has not surfaced in current negotiations, the BBC noted.

Plans call for at least one base at the site of a former US facility in Narsarsuaq, with others likely on existing infrastructure like airfields or ports suitable for upgrades.

Senior State Department official Michael Needham is leading the effort, according to a high-ranking diplomat cited by the BBC, who described the administration's approach as highly professional.

The talks build on a 1951 agreement between the US and Denmark, allowing expansion of US military activities in Greenland. While Danish approval is required, experts on Arctic security note Denmark has never denied a formal US request.

Amid focus on the Iran conflict, a compact team including Needham and one or two State Department or National Security Council staffers has convened with Greenland counterparts at least five times since mid-January.

Three sources informed the BBC that President Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, is not participating.

"He was expected to act more as an enthusiastic promoter, pushing the notion of asserting dominance to claim Greenland as a security asset," said an anonymous associate of Landry.

The US maintains just one military base in Greenland today, a sharp decline from roughly 17 during the Cold War peak. That facility supports NORAD missile monitoring but lacks maritime surveillance capabilities, the BBC reported.
