Rarely does a week pass without fresh reports from the front lines of Russia war against Ukraine. This instance brought a genuine breakthrough as Ukrainian forces completed the first known evacuation of a wounded soldier by heavy rotary wing drone.

The account comes from the 30th Separate Mechanised Brigade and was shared with a reporter from Oboronka who interviewed the drone crew and the rescued soldier. The action occurred near Kupiansk in Kharkiv region on the eastern bank of the Oskil river.

Infantryman Kostiantyn Magura Vlasenko from the 2nd Mechanised Battalion of the 30th Separate Mechanised Brigade set out with a colleague into the grey zone in early June 2025.

They first sheltered in one spot but rising water forced them out and they could not return due to intense danger. His colleague later perished.

In February Magura suffered wounds from a Russian drone strike that damaged both legs. He performed amputations on his lower limbs to stay alive according to the report.

No specifics were given on the method used though comparable incidents have been recorded before.

During a 2018 training event in Slovakia a US soldier trapped under a tank cut off his own leg to free a comrade and later received Soldier of the Year honors in 2021.

For Magura the injuries left him unable to move making clear he could not exit the front unaided.

Ukrainian units explored every option to reach him amid very challenging conditions.
