British law enforcement officials announced on Friday that they are reviewing a social media message from the spouse of National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, who appeared to voice backing for Palestine Action, a pro-Palestinian organization designated as a terrorist entity.

Author and journalist Sarah Helm, spouse of Powell, replied on the X platform to a message concerning Irish novelist Sally Rooney. Rooney had declared this week that her books would cease to be available in Britain, intending to direct her earnings toward aiding Palestine Action.

In her message, Helm stated: "God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action."

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police indicated that the message "is being assessed to determine whether any further police investigation may be required."

Palestine Action designated under UK terrorism legislation

Palestine Action received its designation under terrorism statutes in the previous year, rendering any expression of support for the organization a criminal violation.

When queried, a government representative noted: "These views are held by an individual who does not represent the government in any capacity."

The group has conducted demonstrations involving property damage in advocacy for Palestinian issues and rejects characterizations of these actions as terrorism. In June, four members received prison sentences for a 2024 operation targeting a facility run by defense contractor Elbit, resulting in damages exceeding £1 million.

Amnesty International reports that more than 3,500 individuals have faced arrest in Britain on charges related to supporting Palestine Action since the prohibition took effect last year, with numerous cases involving the display of signs.

Palestine Action contested the government's prohibition decision, yet the Court of Appeal determined in June that the designation was valid.
