Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Friday that Turkey expects progress soon on ending US sanctions and securing F-35 fighter jets, stressing that allies should face no restrictions in the defense sector.

US President Donald Trump, who traveled to Ankara this week for a NATO Summit, announced on Tuesday that he plans to lift sanctions imposed on Turkey because of its purchase of Russian S-400 missile systems.

Speaking to state broadcaster TRT Haber, Fidan noted political commitment from both capitals to end the sanctions, with relevant ministers actively addressing the matter.

Washington applied sanctions on Turkey in 2020 under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act over the S-400 purchase and removed Ankara from the F-35 program. Congress later required Turkey to relinquish the S-400s to rejoin the stealth fighter initiative.

Fidan explained that two issues in Turkey-US ties remain subject to American legislation.

"CAATSA represents one challenge. The F-35 matter stands as another. With any luck we will settle both matters soon, and I see no obstacles ahead," Fidan said in comments aired on TRT.

Turkey Seeks F-35 Jets While Trump Weighs Decision

Two sources indicated this week that Trump was likely to back a potential F-35 sale during the Ankara visit. Trump remarked that he "has not totally made up his mind" on the topic.

Turkish daily Hurriyet reported on Friday that Ankara might soon declare plans to resell the S-400s to a Gulf nation to encourage Washington to approve F-35 sales.

When asked about the report and whether Turkey had requested Russian approval for such a transfer, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed ongoing contacts with Ankara on what he called an "extremely sensitive issue."
