Donald Trump announced the United States will examine European Union actions and warned of possible new tariffs tied to penalties against leading American technology firms.

The move follows the European Commission decision days earlier to fine Google 890 million euros, or about 1 billion dollars, for practices seen as limiting competition in its services.

Writing on Truth Social, the platform he controls, the president declared the EU would face a substantial cost for its handling of Google and other major US tech firms including Apple, Meta and Amazon.

"The United States of America is not a 'PIGGYBANK' for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!" he stated.

Trump called for all such penalties to be completely overturned and said he was starting a trade review of the EU while weighing a large tariff.

He noted the US would launch a Section 301 investigation right away into claims that European regulators are taking from American businesses and ultimately American taxpayers.

Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 empowers the Office of the United States Trade Representative to examine and address trade practices viewed as unfair, and the second Trump Administration has begun several such reviews in recent months.

The tariff warning arrives one day after Trump revealed fresh duties on 60 trading partners including the EU, UK and China set between 10 percent and 12.5 percent.

Last month Trump also threatened a 100 percent import tariff on any European nation adopting a digital services tax on US technology companies, even as several countries have maintained such taxes for years.

Leading tech firms including Google, Meta, Apple and Amazon have given millions of dollars to organizations supporting Trump's campaign and presidency.

Google spokesman José Castañeda told the BBC the firm had worked diligently to follow Europe's Digital Markets Act yet had raised issues about the effects of recent commission rulings.

"We appreciate the engagement by the administration and US government," Castañeda said.

Trump further claimed in his post that Apple had faced EU penalties totaling 15 billion dollars, Meta 3 billion dollars and Amazon 2.5 billion dollars.

Officials from Meta, Apple, Amazon and the European Commission have been asked for comment.

The origin of the numbers cited by Trump is unclear.

Shortly before winning the presidency in 2024, Trump said Apple chief executive Tim Cook had reached out directly to voice concerns over fines the company received from European regulators.

The contact occurred soon after Apple ended a lengthy dispute involving unpaid taxes.

Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has received several EU penalties for issues involving user privacy and competition rules and now faces additional penalties over claims of addictive app features.

Meta stated last year that the EU was seeking to limit successful American companies.

Amazon has faced probes from the European Commission at times but has largely avoided major fines, reaching an agreement with regulators in 2022 to modify some practices in Europe.

A separate body in Luxembourg once imposed a fine exceeding 800 million dollars on Amazon for General Data Protection Regulation violations, though that decision was overturned last year.
