While this view holds steady in Japan, it sparks debate throughout Europe.

The Trump administration continues to press allies for greater commitments while shifting more responsibilities their way. Over time, patience wears thin.

Recent tensions centered on Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, previously viewed as Donald Trump's strongest European ally. She stood out as the sole European head of government at his second inauguration. The English edition of her memoir features an introduction from Donald Trump Jr, and vice-president JD Vance provided one for her follow-up work.

Yet after the US president asserted that she had "begged him" for a shared image at the G7 gathering in France, Meloni responded forcefully, labeling his version of events "completely fabricated". "I fail to understand why the president of the United States acts this way toward partners," she stated in a recorded message.

She noted that Trump "fails to apply equal resolve against adversaries of the West and the United States, instead extending more leniency to their leaders."

That stung.

The US president's negotiation style often includes effusive compliments for figures like Vladimir Putin (described as intelligent, firm and reliable), China's Xi Jinping (noted for "impressive presence") and North Korea's Kim Jong-Un (with whom he claims strong rapport).

While occasionally effective, this reveals a core weakness in Trump's global approach. Partners receive minimal recognition or outright slights. Regardless of defense spending levels or public flattery, expectations remain unmet. The dynamic feels less like a fair exchange and more like mistreatment.

Public Insight Prevails

Ordinary citizens notice these patterns, even when officials overlook them. Associations with the Trump administration now carry political risks in Europe. Meloni, drawing from Italy's far-right origins, confronts competition from the harder-line National Future party headed by the outspoken, pro-Kremlin retired general Roberto Vannacci.

Given this context, defending Italy's standing proves a calculated step for Meloni. Similar issues affect pro-Trump factions within British and German far-right groups. Supporters of Trump represent a smaller share compared to his critics.

Additional European figures express frustration with Trump's overconfidence, inconsistency and self-importance.

"I run the show," he declared upon arriving late to the G7 event. They also resent unexpected moves, including the fresh assessment of American troop deployments in Europe announced by the verbose yet limited US defense secretary Pete Hegseth. Uncertainty surrounding the upcoming Nato meeting in Ankara adds to the strain.

They ought to voice these concerns openly.

Emanuel Macron of France, Friedrich Merz of Germany, Pedro Sanchez of Spain, Konstantinos Mitsotakis of Greece, Rob Jetten of the Netherlands, Donald Tusk of Poland, Nordic and Baltic leaders, EU officials, and the current British prime minister should each take time soon to emphasize two main ideas.

First, they value the partnership with the United States, which serves mutual goals, including Europe's provision of key military facilities at no cost to US forces.

Second, despite fluctuations over the years, American global strategy has long drawn a useful line between allies and opponents. Subtle irony might escape this administration, yet coordinated action from partners will register clearly.

Trump remains sensitive to criticism and dislikes it intensely. Therefore, he should avoid inviting it through needless affronts. Ultimately, global affairs operate without sentiment.
