US President Donald Trump delivered a humorous remark about the widespread use of the name Mohammad across Muslim communities while poking fun at Iran's leadership during a campaign rally on Friday.

"If you are unsure about a person's name from the Middle East region, simply say Mohammad," Trump told supporters in Dalton, Georgia. "There is roughly a 65 percent likelihood of success. Hello, Mohammad. I have used this approach for years and have yet to make an error."

The name Mohammad ranks among the most frequent male names for Muslims, who often honor the Prophet Mohammad, the founder of Islam, by choosing it for their sons.

Trump shared the observation while addressing Iran at a rally held in a hangar at Dalton Municipal Airport in Georgia, where he backed Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

"Iran remains the sole nation where no one desires to serve as president," Trump stated, before playfully inquiring of several individuals named Mohammad if they sought the position. Masoud Pezeshkian has held the presidency of Iran since 2024.

The audience in Georgia responded with limited enthusiasm to the remark.

Muslim advocacy groups fault Trump for remarks targeting Muslims

Muslim advocacy organizations have often faulted Trump for statements they view as deriding Muslims, immigrants, and ethnic minorities.

He has continued similar comments throughout the midterm campaign period, especially regarding Somali and Muslim Americans, including Muslim Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat.

Trump reaffirmed his pledge that Iran would never acquire a nuclear weapon, seven months after the United States and Israel initiated conflict with Tehran partly to weaken its nuclear efforts.
