Trump honors Lindsey Graham as patriot and friend

Former President Donald Trump spoke warmly of the late Senator Lindsey Graham during a Capitol Rotunda tribute on Tuesday, noting the South Carolina Republican's broad appeal across party lines.

"Virtually everyone, Republican or Democrat, liked Lindsey," Trump remarked. "Well, not everybody, but he sounds good. Not everybody. He was a tough cookie."

Trump shared a lighthearted anecdote about Graham declining an early prayer breakfast invitation from Senator Tim Scott, joking that even a divine return would not prompt him to rise before 10 a.m.

Concluding his remarks, Trump expressed deep affection: "We love you. God bless you. We will always be with you, and you are very, very special."

Hundreds of lawmakers assembled to pay respects to Graham, known for his strong advocacy of an active American role abroad and his consistent support for key allies. An Air Force band performed in recognition of his military service, and colleagues described him as outgoing, witty and effective at building consensus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the gathering, underscoring Graham's influence on foreign policy matters. Netanyahu later stated that America had lost a patriot while Israel had lost one of its strongest advocates.

Vance recalls Graham's persuasive skills and humor

Vice President JD Vance remembered Graham as a magnetic presence in the Senate whose colorful stories often left colleagues in stitches. He noted that Graham viewed the chamber as a place for genuine persuasion and relationship-building.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune added that few took their duties more seriously yet could lighten the mood so effectively during intense work sessions.

Graham's sister appointed to complete term

Graham, who passed away on July 11 at age 71 from a heart condition, had been seeking another Senate term after winning his primary. His sister, Darlene Graham, was named by Governor Henry McMaster to finish the current term and has declared her candidacy for a full term with Trump's backing.

A former Air Force attorney and National Guard member, Graham served in the state legislature and House before entering the Senate in 2002. Though initially critical of Trump during the 2016 campaign, he later became one of the president's most reliable allies and frequent golf companions.

Additional memorial events are scheduled in South Carolina on Wednesday ahead of Graham's burial.
