President Donald Trump directed his administration on Friday to place signs outside the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History to inform visitors that some exhibits contain inaccuracies, marking his continued push to influence the narrative of U.S. history.

This action comes after a July 4 report from his Domestic Policy Council criticized Smithsonian leaders for failing to present history in an inspiring and unifying manner that reflects the nation's republic.

Unable to swiftly remove museum leadership or mandate exhibit alterations, the president focused his order on sidewalks managed by the National Park Service. The directive requires signs that reference the White House report and guide visitors to materials offering what he describes as accurate details on America's past, along with plans for a temporary display to address perceived errors.

Smithsonian representatives have not yet issued a response to inquiries.

Anthea M. Hartig, director of the American history museum, defended the institution during recent congressional testimony, asserting that the report misrepresents the museum's overall efforts while emphasizing the value found in its collections, exhibits, and programs.

The Smithsonian functions independently from the executive branch, with museum directors reporting to Secretary Lonnie Bunch under oversight from a Board of Regents.

Trump's push to reshape the Smithsonian represents his broader campaign to reform cultural institutions, including universities and arts organizations, that he sees as out of alignment with conservative perspectives. He assumed the chairmanship of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to overhaul its programming, though a court later required removal of signs bearing his name.

The administration has also pursued changes at historical locations outside Washington, such as in Philadelphia, where a court ruling last week permitted reinstallation of panels at George Washington's former residence that critics argue downplay the history of slavery.

In March, Trump announced plans to target funding for Smithsonian programs promoting what he called divisive narratives and improper ideology through an executive order.
