US President Donald Trump was unaware of the severe munitions shortage that could restrict American military choices regarding Iran, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday based on a source.

The source indicated that Trump challenged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a meeting at Camp David on Friday. Trump stated he believed the munitions problem had already been resolved and felt misled by the information provided, the report noted.

This shortage of missiles may have influenced Trump's choice to avoid what he called the largest attack since World War II against Iran over the weekend, according to the source cited in the report.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the account as inaccurate in a post on X on Wednesday evening.

This situation never occurred, she stated.

The story was offered to multiple outlets by an individual aiming to criticize the Secretary without basis. The President holds the Secretary in high regard and views his performance as excellent.

The US military has depleted nearly its entire reserve of precision long-range missiles over the five-month conflict with Iran, per a Reuters report from Tuesday.

These advanced munitions enable precise strikes from secure distances and have proven essential in the ongoing US-Iran tensions.

Ukraine Faces Interceptor Deficit Following US License Refusal

The Washington Post reported that during the initial month of the Iran conflict, the US launched over 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles, more than 1,000 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missiles, and at least 1,300 tactical ballistic missiles.

In response to queries about the stockpile figures, the White House provided a statement from Trump indicating the US holds far more munitions than anyone in the world and far more than needed, Reuters reported.

Defense firms are currently producing more munitions than ever before while also expanding facilities and equipment at unprecedented rates, Trump added.

The munitions shortfall extends beyond the Iran situation. Stocks of Army Tactical Missile Systems, which Ukraine also seeks, have been exhausted to the point that virtually none remain, Reuters reported.

From February to July, the US consumed about 65 percent of its Patriot interceptors, resulting in reluctance to provide the vital defense systems to Ukraine.

The interceptor shortage stemming from US munitions use in the Iran conflict has at times proven fatal in Ukraine.

Although Trump initially offered Ukraine a license to produce Patriot interceptors in early July, he later rejected suggestions that the US had consented to transfer the technology.

On Wednesday, after a fatal Russian strike on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the lack of interceptor missiles encourages Russia to conduct attacks that claim lives, the BBC reported.
