President Donald Trump staged professional mixed martial arts bouts on the White House lawn Sunday in a first-of-its-kind display that merged official pageantry with his combative political approach and his relatives commercial pursuits.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship presented seven matches, marking the first time the organization has held a sanctioned event at the executive mansion. The card formed part of the administration program marking the country 250th anniversary and stood as a highlight of the president summer sports initiatives.

The fights took place on Trump 80th birthday and followed shortly after he and Iranian representatives revealed a peace accord ending their four-month conflict, a development that lifted consumer prices to a three-year peak and unsettled voters while he worked to dispel notions of a lame-duck presidency.

Within minutes of reaching his ringside chair, as the Marine Corps band delivered a live version of AC/DC Thunderstruck, Trump began posting updates on the Iran agreement across social platforms and took calls from reporters.

Inside the eight-sided chain-link enclosure, branding from leading American companies and several of Trump political supporters, among them the video platform Rumble, logistics firm EasyPost, and the conservative group Turning Point USA, appeared on the mat surface.

Winning fighters met Trump after their contests. American competitor Bo Nickal scaled the cage wall following his knockout win to greet the president, who held the fighter red gloves and tapped his damp shoulder in acknowledgment.

This is unbelievable, Nickal remarked later while pointing toward Trump during a post-fight discussion with podcaster Joe Rogan. It requires a truly distinctive individual to possess the courage for an undertaking of this nature.

Another winner, heavyweight Josh Hokit, presented Trump with a keepsake that the president wore around his neck before offering a profanity-filled address that praised Trump and ended with a disparaging remark aimed at former first lady Michelle Obama.

The temporary arena, dubbed The Claw and rising twenty rows high on every side with supports taller than the White House roofline, created a close-quarters atmosphere unlike the larger venues typical for UFC events.

Participants prepared in a facility at the adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building and entered the cage from inside the White House. Sound from the public address system echoed against the Truman Balcony, causing vibrations along the residence walls.

Striking, commercial leverage

Seventeen months into his second term, Trump has often stretched presidential conventions to draw focus and convey authority.

In March he disclosed acquiring as much as $50,000 worth of shares in TKO Group Holdings, the publicly listed parent of UFC. The promotion covered $60 million in event expenses, though precise financial terms between the company and the White House remain undisclosed.

The great majority of citizens are not marking 250 years of the nation by viewing a UFC contest, noted Dan Rayburn, an independent streaming analyst. This amounts to a private gathering.

Closed captioning, carried on Paramount+, received sponsorship from Trump Coin, the gold and silver medallions featuring the president likeness that are marketed by his family. World Liberty Financial, a digital-asset venture backed by two of his sons and the son of his lead diplomatic negotiator, helped fund performance bonuses awarded to standout fighters.

Tickets were never offered to the general public. The White House invited service members to occupy part of the 4,000 seats, while remaining passes were allocated by the administration. UFC extended additional invitations to individuals contributing more than $1 million, according to a person familiar with the arrangements.

The White House has dismissed claims of conflicting interests, stating that family members oversee the president business matters.

Limited public support for White House card

Trump exercised broad executive discretion to stage a commercial promotion on government property, a break from established practice that triggered litigation and questions over expenses and ethical standards.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey of 4,531 adults fielded June 3-8 found only 16 percent viewed the event as suitable. A federal judge declined Friday to halt the card after challengers contended the administration overstepped its bounds.

Trump, whose sporadic ties to mixed martial arts span decades, maintains close ties with UFC head Dana White and the Ellison family, whose Paramount network holds a $7.7 billion contract to broadcast UFC bouts through 2033.

Trump has woven sports into his presidency, commenting on topics such as transgender participation and college football compensation while attending numerous high-profile competitions, including prior UFC cards.

France postponed the Group of Seven summit, set to open Monday, to allow Trump to attend Sunday UFC event.

Roughly one-fifth of Americans identify as MMA enthusiasts. The Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that fight followers do not rate Trump overall job performance especially highly.
