Voters across Switzerland have turned down a plan to cap the national population at 10 million, according to early projections.

Although the final tally is incomplete, current indications show roughly 55 percent opposed the measure while 45 percent supported it.

The referendum threatened to endanger the nation free movement pact with the European Union.

The Swiss population has expanded quickly since 2002, rising from 7.3 million to the present 9.1 million, with foreign nationals making up 27 percent of residents.

Yet arguments from the People Party that a population limit would ease strain on infrastructure, housing and natural resources failed to win sufficient backing.

While the Swiss People Party maintained that the cap would safeguard public services and the environment, the group has long promoted anti-immigration positions and often attributes social issues to asylum seekers and minority groups.

Some citizens expressed concern over potential shortages of essential staff in tourism, medical facilities and elder care.

Business leaders in particular worried about endangering Switzerland vital access to the European single market.

More than half of Swiss exports go to the EU, and that market access hinges on adherence to free movement rules. Approval of the cap would have forced termination of the agreement.

Many voters also appeared uneasy about steps that might isolate the country amid global uncertainty.

Despite its neutral stance, Switzerland is increasing defense spending and seeking closer security cooperation with European partners.

The country direct democracy system requires major policy choices to go before voters, with 100,000 signatures sufficient to trigger a national ballot.

Two young politicians holding contrasting views on population limits spoke with the BBC ahead of the vote.

Nils Fiechter, 29, a representative of the Swiss People Party in Bern canton parliament, stated that control has been lost and unchecked immigration is eroding Swiss identity.

In 2022 Fiechter and a colleague were found guilty of racial discrimination by the Swiss Federal Court over a 2018 poster campaign aimed at Roma and traveller communities.

He links issues such as housing shortages, traffic congestion, overloaded schools and stretched social services directly to immigration levels.

Helin Genis, a 31-year-old Social Democrat on Bern city council, rejected these claims as misplaced blame.

She noted that migrants do not set rent prices, raise health insurance costs or shape decisions on housing, infrastructure and social spending.

Viewing challenges solely through a migration lens fosters division rather than answers, she said.

The proposed cap raised concerns at the business group Economiesuisse.

Chief economist Rudolf Minsch warned that passage could complicate ties with the European Union.

Brussels has cautioned non-members against selecting only the benefits of the single market while avoiding obligations such as free movement.

The EU remains Switzerland primary trading partner, Minsch noted, making stable relations essential.

Employers also highlighted risks of labor shortfalls and reduced access to skilled workers from across Europe.

Immigrants account for half the workforce in Swiss hotels, while hospitals and care homes depend heavily on foreign staff.

The Swiss People Party claimed immigration drives rising demand for hospital beds and school places, and that restrictions would relieve pressure.

Opponents called this view unrealistic, noting that 20 percent of the population is now over age 65.

Younger workers and taxpayers are needed to support an aging society, and Switzerland is not producing enough domestically, they cautioned.

Switzerland is boosting defense outlays and, despite neutrality, is moving toward tighter defense links with neighbors.

Parliament member Jon Pult of the Social Democrats told the BBC his chief worry about any cap was isolation in an unstable world.
